Introduction

We went $60+ again, and really higher than that. Everyone came to play and the result was a ridiculously good tasting, even for our group. Special thanks to JD his generosity in opening not 1 but 2 amazing older Bordeaux.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 1983 Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Really aged. Nose almost DOA. Cloudy, lots of color change. Tastes leathery, has a short finish; Sweetness, thought it was a really old CdP. This one is past its prime.

  • 1995 Château Calon-Ségur

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Good color and nose. Palate is sweet, good fat, tobacco. Has some tannin still, doesn't seem quite fully mature yet. I guessed 2000 Left Bank. Third time we've had this wine in the last couple of months, and every one was different.

  • 2007 Tenuta Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Lighter color, some change. Nose more subtle. On palate, sweet cherry liqueur, refined tannin. This was a beautiful wine, I thought it was '07 Poggio di Sotto. Really well done.

  • 1996 Château Pontet-Canet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tobacco nose, color pretty solid. Tannin is softer, round, made me think fat vintage. Not a lot of Cab notes, so I thought it could be Right Bank. Still youthful fruit, but as noted tannins are very soft so it's quite drinkable.

  • 2006 Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pure Rouge

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Sweet nose, fresh, spicy, a bit of alcohol. Still very youthful, would've liked to taste it with more time. Not fooling anyone that it's CdP, but it's a bit in your face still. Came back at the end of the night and it had mellowed some, but I'd really like to try it again in 3-4 years.

  • 1989 Château Margaux 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Tobacco hits right off. On the palate, very earthy, just what I want in aged Bordeaux. A tad on the leaner side compared to others on the night, but not in a bad way at all. This was above and beyond our normal tasting range, but no complaints. In a great spot right now.

  • 2011 Domaine Perrot-Minot Chapelle-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Fresh nose, very nice. Palate is a bit short though. A little candied cherry, but overall it's shut down. We had this a few months back and it was much more expressive. I'd stash away for a while, but it's got all the pieces in place.

  • 2009 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Great nose, sweet, bright. Some color change. Tastes so bright, but youthful. Power and tannin, has to be Barolo. Sexy, cedar, sandy, I guessed this was Sandrone. Had this a couple of months ago (see Rezy13's note) and it took some time to open up. This one had good decant time and was really starting to sing. I think the '09s will be that way - drink early and enjoy.

  • 2001 Vérité La Joie

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Bigger, brawny wine. Lots of tannin, definitely character of Bordeaux grapes, but seems a blend. No funk or earth either, so I thought it was a big SuperTuscan. Amazed at how old this was, seemed like it was still not at peak yet.

  • 2000 Giuseppe Quintarelli Valpolicella Classico Superiore

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Classico Superiore

Sweet nose, some VA, immediately thought Veneto. On the palate, confirmed it, and I was all over Quintarelli. So complex, though the VA was a little strong for some. I do think it was on a quicker aging curve than the last bottle I had a couple of months ago. Still, if you love wine from an old master, this is a great example, and should be in its prime window.

  • 2000 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Good nose, palate is cherry. Color shows some age. There's a little tannin still here, but not a lot, and a bit drying. Overall, not the best bottle of this I've had, and it seems to be fading a bit. No complaints at this age though.

  • 1983 Château Palmer

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Nose definitely had the tobacco and earth of aged Bordeaux. Lots of color change too. A little richness still, but definitely seemed Left Bank. I didn't quite go this old, but it's fully mature. First time I've had an '83 from Margaux, and it was pretty brilliant. Thanks JD!
