Introduction

Six of us gathered for what just happened to be David's birthday. Well, for me, I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate! Happy B-day Dave, hope you had as much fun as me.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2006 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Speciale Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. The nose has citrus and yellow fruits, chalk and yeast. The palate is dominated by chalky minerality and citrus, sour lemon, citrus pith and an oxidative style. Pretty bold and not really stylistically attractive to me with an over abundance of chalk and bite on the finish.

  • NV R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Hommage Blanc de Blancs 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Really nice stuff; yeast, light toast and nuts, pear, focused nose and palate, elegant, feels light on its feet, a little grapefruit on the back end, clean minerals, good length. This brings the entire package in an attractive style that balances depth and finesse. 92+pts.

  • 2008 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes plus. This was showing very well. Excellent nose with citrus, orange, meyer lemon, and stone laden minerality. The palate is on par with a racy acidity, focused lemon, ,saline, mineral, long finish with lots of dry extract. Excellent.

  • 2005 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. The nose starts off with toasty oak notes, gradually settles and evolves over 20 minutes to show the fruit, meyer lemon and wet stones to compliment the oak. The palate still feels youthful too, plenty of oak still there, though it is certainly well done and showing signs of integration. There's nice weight and texture, creme brulee, almost a sweet note to the creamy citrus fruits, toasted oak and a medium plus finish. Very good, and still improving. 93+pts.

  • 1993 Jean-Pierre Mugneret Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Dark red color. Opened at the table and sat for about an hour. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Fantastic nose, love the complexity, there's a great spice box potpourri that is intoxicating, red cherry, lots of Vosne spice, plenty of damp earth, and hints of soy. The nose really is the star, but the palate doesn't disappoint either. Tart cherry, darker cherry fruit, deeply earthy, medium full body, minerals, very nice balance . This was in a good place. Just wish I'd picked up a couple of these.

  • 2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Dark red color. Two hours slow-O. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Wow, there's some power and depth here, intensity with great spice notes on the nose, cherry, dark red berries. Sour cherry, dark red berries, brown sugar, oak, rich texture, red currant, spice, still some firm tannins with a nice long finish. I think this has got some staying power and would love to revisit in 5 years. May not be markedly better, but I don't think it slips at all. 93+pts.

  • 2007 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Dark red color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. I don't know what the treatment was here if any. This was one of those '07's that wasn't showing like some have. More tightly wound and a bit green, oak, red fruits, in need of time. 89+(+)pts.

Closing

A very nice night of great food and wines. I can't say there was a definitive WOTN, most of the wines were outstanding and it would be hard to choose just one tonight.
