Introduction

Five of us got together to drink some nice wines. The reds were tasted double blind. My notes include only half of the reds that left strong impressions. The best taster honor goes to Paul N who actually was able to correctly identify a SQN syrah. I was the distant second.

Flight 1 - Whites (5 Notes)

  • 2009 Marcassin Chardonnay Marcassin Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

This particular bottle seems slightly riper than the bottle from February. Initially served a bit cold, dense yellow fruits and coiled. As warms up, lemon curd, lemon oil, vanilla and oak. Excellent concentration, coiled, good acidity and mineral presence and medium finish with a bit of heat. Not liking this bottle as much as the previous one which I found much fresher.

  • 2009 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

This has settled in and no longer displaying incredible vibrancy. More oily yellow fruits, only a hint of matchstick and mineral. Exceptional concentration yet exceptional precision and energy. Not as pleasurable as the last bottle from Dec, 2015. Nevertheless, very impressive and enjoyable.

  • 2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Bouchères 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Very mineral driven expression with only a hint of citrus fruit, reminds me a bit of Cotat. Subtle but energetic nose displaying lemon, lemon oil, fresh granny smith and limestone. Medium concentration, strong mineral expression, good acidity and clean long finish. Very mineral driven wine.

  • 2010 Lucien Le Moine Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

Very ripe, slightly dark yellow. Nose and palate reflect the color, very ripe yellow fruit and sweet spices. Excellent concentration, slight burnt yellow fruit driven palate impression, good acidity and long finish. Extremely ripe fruit expression makes the wine cloying and a bit out of balance. I can't say premox but too ripe.

  • 2013 En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Blanca Del Carlos 93 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

This fits perfectly my definition of natural wine. The hipsters must love it and I do to. A lot of orange here, the color is also like OJ. Dry orange peel, orange juice and sweet spices. Despite very ripe nose, the palate shows excellent balance. This is a very unique win.

Flight 2 - Reds (4 Notes)

  • 1967 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Paul initially mentions “The eucalyptus note reminds me Marthas” but he changes his guess. This is a classic Marthas with so much eucalyptus, no resemblance to Bordeaux. Medium expressive nose displaying plum and delicate, slightly dry cherry, cinnamon, strong note of eucalyptus, mint, leather and mineral. Fully resolved palate with good acidity and mineral presence, clean finish with strong eucalyptus as the end note. It is starting to decline but the strong eucalyptus note gives some energy. It is a bit monolithic, i.e. plum and eucalyptus which is not uncommon in old California cabs for my palate. Nevertheless quite enjoyable.

  • 1991 Chateau Musar 93 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Served blind, knowing who brought the wine, I am thinking the 83 Rayas. A lot of cherry fruit, sweet spices and earth. Medium concentration, dry cherry fruit driven palate impression, subtle and warm palate, fully integrated tannins and medium finish with sweet cherry fruit end. Not as long as the 83 Rayas but seems awfully close.

  • 2011 Château de la Négly Coteaux du Languedoc Clos des Truffiers 93 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc

Served blind, Assaf initially guesses Truffiers but changes his mine. I agree with Sinequanon's take below, really SQN like. Very ripe black fruits, lavender, oak, blackberry dipped in chocolate, baking spices and tree bark, Excellent concentration, almost 10W-40, intense ripe dark fruit and vanilla driven palate impression. A lot of wood shown at the moment. This is very MODERN, caveat emptor!

  • 2004 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

Served blind by Paul. Strong note of stem, my guess is Dujac CDR from 2008. I tell Paul that he better not brought the 04. Strong stem but not obvious LBT. Subtle blackberry fruit, strong stem, black pepper and earth. Medium concentration, stem like dry note and medium finish. Not a bad wine but not worth the price.
