Introduction

Wines decanted five hours before serving double blind:

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Deep blackish colour. On the nose, dark berries and cherries, earth, iron and an unclean, old barrel element. The bouquet was best, and freshest, on opening, it deteriorated from there. On palate, very closed and extremely tight. Dark fruit, wet soil and iron filings, with that unhygienic-seeming component. Serious, unresolved tannins, bitter and drying on the finish. I have real doubts that this wine will resolve into something attractive. No one liked it very much.

  • 2002 Jean Boillot & Fils Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

A lighter ruby colour, showing some evolution. A more lifted nose, showing Vosne spice and red and black cherries and dry underbrush. That lift is also on the palate, with raspberries, red cherries, dry earth and brushwood. Most preferred this wine to the Comte Armand but thought it was the older, more secondary, of the two wines. Some tasters did say, identifying it as a Burgundy, that it was "too New World", but I didn't agree with the observation. Nice detail. Tannins largely now resolved, low acidity. About there now for drinking but no need to hurry.
