Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Château Monbousquet 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Drank at Tasters Guild in NYC for 2003 Bordeaux tasting. First of the night. Ruby red in color, some bricking. Generous floral nose, with violets & red fruit. A bit on the viscous side, good amount of ripe black fruit, with better-than-expected acidity level. On the plummy side, with some spice. Tannins mostly resolved leaving a silky, elegant pour. Good length too. Overall, a very nice wine that showed better than I had anticipated for the vintage.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Château Duhart-Milon

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Drank at Tasters Guild in NYC. Dark cherry core. Slight bricking. Nose of cedar, spice and pencil shavings. Medium bodied, quite silky and soft. Spicy with cedar, glycerine, coffee and lead pencil. Soft tannins and quite smoky. Not particular complex for a Paullaic. Still, this wine's in a very good place right now!

  • 2003 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Drank at NYC Tasters Guild. Dark ruby core and no outward signs of age. Reticent nose. Spicy with fairly prominent tannins and structure. Black fruit, lead pencil, some wood, cassis and some leather. Wine drinks very young and seemed somewhat closed.

  • 2003 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Drank at NYC tasters guild. Drank with Pichon Baron. Solid red core, no signs of age. Wine is more open and more developed than the Baron. Elegant and graceful with soft tannins. More approachable than the Baron. Plenty of cedar, lead pencil, graphite and glycerine here. Delicious and showing nicely on this occasion.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Château Beychevelle 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Drank at NYC tasters guild. Ruby red color and not showing its age at all. Nose is mostly closed, though I detect a slight scent of berries. Quite juicy and soft. Palate is far more expressive than the nose would let on. Some wood, lots of ripe black fruit, soft tannins and great complexity and length. Very pretty and elegant wine.

  • 2003 Château Léoville Poyferré 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Drank at NYC tasters guild. Slight nose shows black fruit. Dark ruby color with lots of bricking. Quite tannic with plenty of ripe black fruit. Round with good length. Mocha, tar, leather here. Not particularly long and has quite a tannic bite, with not as much fruit as I'd like. Not particular balanced. Looks and tastes older than it it

Flight 6 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Drank at NYC tasters guild. Dark cherry red color. Slight bricking. Nose is slightly closed and the wine showed a bit austere. Big tannins, loses of graphite and lead pencil on my teeth. Plenty of black fruit along with cedar and pencil shavings. Well-structured, concentrated, sophisticated wine. This is the most bordeaux-like wine that I've tasted on this occasion so far.

Flight 7 (1 Note)

  • 2003 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Drank at NYC Tasters Guild for 2003 Bordeaux tasting. Certainly the bargain wine of the night, if not the WOTN. Clear rim, ruby core. Nose exudes cedar and sweet fruits. Lots of earthiness here, as well as some funk, mushrooms, cigar box and tobacco. A bit tannic but the wine's elements are very nicely integrated. Lots of funky barnyard, very dry with lots of cedar. Very enjoyable.

Flight 8 (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Haut-Brion 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Drank at NYC tasters guild and was the disappointment of the evening's tasting. Slight and stingy nose shows some black fruit. Quite tannic and not showing much. Quite short and a bit on the thin side. This wine is in its dumb phase is the only way I can explain its showing. Give this wine lots of time before opening.

  • 2003 Château Margaux 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Drank at NYC tasters guild and was my WOTN. Purple color with no sign of age apparent. Herbal nose without showing much fruit. Medium to heavy body. Plenty of black fruit, some chocolate and mocha, coffee beans, cedar, cigar box. Very soft and very elegant, with soft tannins, great depth of fruit and terrific concentration, yet very structured. Delicious wine with a long way to go....
