Introduction

Thanks to Jason for cooking some fantastic food and being a gracious host. The lamb stew was out of this world. The wines had good intentions, but a few of them did not show as well as expected.

Wine of the night was the 2012 Rivers Marie silver eagle vineyard pinot noir. Not far behind was the 2015 Sineann Wyeast, which showed amazing potential and hedonistic pleasure right now. A distant 3rd place was the 2008 Myriad Rutherford cabernet.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2012 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Pop and pour, brought this to a tasting. This wine is consistent with Rivers Marie style. Tangerine, cranberry, slight cola, spice and minerality. RM remains one of my favorite California pinot producers.

  • 2013 Sineann Pinot Noir Yates Conwill Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Pop and pour, drank a small glass over an hour. This seems quite young. It has good fruit. With time in glass, forest floor and a campfirey smoke flavor builds. There seems to be a lot brooding here, and I'd like to try it in 2-3 years.

  • 2015 Sineann Pinot Noir Wy'east 92 Points

    USA, Oregon/Washington, Columbia Gorge

Pop an dpour, drank a small glass over about an hour. There is heavy oak and massive fruit in this wine right now. Even with those, it is pleasurable and hedonistic to drink. Very floral. It could use some more acid. I thoroughly enjoyed this but feel I didn't get a true experience, as that will come when the wine has 5+ years on it from now.

  • 2009 Ferrer Bobet Priorat Vinyes Velles 92 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Pop and pour, drank a glass over about 45 minutes. There is red to bluish fruit. I don't get any greenness, although the fruit and the structure makes me think of Spain. The acid is high, making this a well-balanced food wine.

  • 2009 Pahlmeyer Merlot 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Decanted 1 hour, drank a small glass at a tasting over about 2 hours. The same as last time, the nose here is a treat while the palate is a challenging mess. The nose has bramble, red to black fruit and spice. The taste is initially acceptable, but the midpalate to finish is bitter and foul. This seems to get worse with time. Being the 2nd bottle that had this characteristic, I would not say it is a bottle issue, and I don't know of any fault this might be. The wine seems to get worse with time, and the nose began to take on the negative qualities of the palate. On the plus side, the alcohol remained in check on this bottle.

  • 2008 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Decanted for about an hour. Drank a small glass at a tasting. This has the typical modern Napa profile. The palate and finish are slightly angular and sharp. This wine definitely seemed to be a big step down from Myriad's Georges III or Dr. Krane, which is to be expected.

  • 2009 St. Supéry Cabernet Sauvignon Dollarhide Estate 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Decanted at least an hour, drank a small glass over about an hour at a tasting. This bottle seemed to be a serviceable and straight-up cabernet. It did not have much sophistication or complexity. The couple that brought it reported that a previous bottle was a much better showing. Nothing wrong with this, but this bottle didn't deliver on its expectation. 88-89

  • 2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

It took about 15 minutes in glass for this wine to reveal that it was corked. Initially, the corkyness was hidden in the wine. With air, there was no question.

  • 2005 Château Climens 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Pop and pour, drank a small glass over about an hour. This was a complete repeat of when we had it several months ago. It takes about 20 minutes in the glass to build up steam. The elegance on this wine is evident. There is toffee, creme brulee, orange rind and apricot. I'm glad to have some of this in the cellar, and wish I had more Climens in general.
