| Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 126 notes) | | | Tasted by geoffucla on 11/14/2009 & rated 90 points: A bit underwhelming, actually. Decanted for 2 hours plus a vinturi. Slightly orange hued, but clear. Mid-light bodied with average CdP flavors. Very similar to the 2001 Guigal CdP. Not remotely like the other vintages of Clos des Papes that I've had. This bottle was bought on auction, so possibly this had some prior heat damage. As is, it was a 90. A good wine, but nothing special and not what I was expecting. Outstanding nose of raspberry, garrigue, spice, and a bit of white pepper. This wine needed some time to open up, as it kept improving over the next couple of hours. Really needs a few more hours to show it's stuff. This was explosive on the palate with flavors of raspberry, kirsch, spice, and herb. Absolutely perfectly balanced with the fruit, acidity and the subtle but powerful tannic backbone bringing it all together . This was a beautiful wine that is drinking great now and will continue to do so for many years to come. (1074 views) | | | Tasted by chaos on 10/9/2009 & rated 92 points: Lovely nose. I only wish that I had left in the cellar a few more years. Quite tight. Only gave it an hour to open up. (1244 views) | | | Tasted by KPB on 10/6/2009 & rated 97 points: The wine needed air; if you pull a cork, try the method "Audouze" and let it breath very slowly for 12 hours. At first it seemed tight and a bit acidic but then softened dramatically. Deep purple, slightly tawny rim, incredible nose has framboise liqueur, thyme, spice cake, toffee -- really wild aromatics, although again, these evolved quite a bit between when the cork was pulled and now. Sweet fruit, rich, yet with the acidity and tannins to balance. Not at all hot (a flaw I find in some vintages of this wine), with dramatic length. I can see that last time I tried this (January) I didn't let it breath remotely long enough, and it shows in my old score (93). So to enjoy what this is about, give it time! Along with beaucastel, wine of the night. Again, even though 2001 (not 2000), was very accessible and sweet on the nose--no barnyard. Rich fruit, very smooth, and as others have said, not so typical a ChdP. But everyone loved it. We got tons of fruit, but very elegant. (1228 views) | | | Tasted by aof on 9/18/2009 & rated 96 points: TN-2000/2001 CdP: Elegant, velvety, balanced and endlessly aromatic. Very Burgundian. It lacks the complexity of the Pegau and the intensity of the Beaucastel, but more than makes up with its poise and finesse. This is really splitting hairs, I suspect on a different night the roles might be reversed. However, unlike the Pagau and Beaucastel, I'm unsure there is much upside to the wine. (1617 views) | | | Tasted by bon vivant on 9/15/2009: This was tossed into a decanter and served immediately - lots of power and dark fruit holding great promise, Massive extraction but tight. I kept on thinking this should have been decanted properly and I would definitely keep my hands off this big bruiser for at least 3 years if not 5. (1546 views) | | | Tasted by beezer6 on 9/5/2009 & rated 95 points: Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Cloudy uncious stew-like blend of spicy red fruit, dried herbs, earth and light pepper. Bay leaf, sage, dark cranberry and cherry aromas with a classic Southern Rhone palate. Finish is ultra streamlined and extremely elegant and enjoyable. This is a wine for the ages. The definition of a classically made Chateauneuf. Wonderful. Probably my favorite CdP to date. (1624 views) | | | Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 9/4/2009 & rated 96 points: Deep red-garnet with garnet rim. Clean, very intense nose of raspberries, black cherries, garrigue, cloves and underbrush. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, medium sweet tannins and flavors mirroring the nose. The middle palate is solid and the finish goes on and on. Very nice, well-structured Chateauneuf! Drink now-12/16. (1508 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 9/4/2009 & rated 94 points: (1238 views) | | | Tasted by Eric on 8/31/2009 & rated 93 points: Stellar. Soaring nose, raspberry, provencale herbs and a hint of white pepper. The palate, oh the palate, spicy, pomegranate, bit of pine needle, nice Grenache elements, a little bit of bitterness towards the back end but more in a bittersweet way than a forced way. This works really well. Still quite young but awfully pleasurable. Well melded together that wants to scream but just doesn't have the oomph behind it just yet to do what it wants to do
taste: an extremely sexy medium feel flows well on the palate with pure tones of dark red fruits, herbs de provence, red florals, and some bits of black pepper. While it has a medium feel, there is a robustness to it at the same time with real classy depth at this young point
overall: This has a lot of ability to be a tremendous wine in the future and is on the verge right now. The feel and depth are there, the tones just need to really want to expressive themselves fully yet. There's lots to like with this wine as the tannins were still making themselves known to let you know that there is still some patience that is to be required (1663 views) | | | Tasted by jerhardt on 8/16/2009 & rated 93 points: Beautiful once again...consistent with prior bottles. This was all about rich raspberry, garrigue, licorice and herbs on a rich frame with long finish. Still drinking on the young side, this should improve for 3-5 years and drink well long thereafter. This wine impresses and holds serve. Paired this time with slow smoked ribs and pork loin, and stood tall. Outstanding. | By Lyle Fass Rockss and Fruit (10/3/2003) (Clos des Papes) Great nose of crushed hot pebbles, cherry liquor, kirsch, wild berries, smoke, little bit of an exotic tomato hint. Elegant but with sweet concentrated fruit and tremendous ripeness. All perfectly ripe red fruits. Seamless yet spreading. Great acid and serious stony complex minerals on the finish. As Yaacov has repeatedly said this is one of the most Burgundian CDP's out there. This was singing on this particular night. | NOTE: Scores and reviews are the property of Rockss and Fruit.
