Introduction

A relaxed blind tasting with Gareth Ferreira on a Saturday, a good fun way to spend an hour or so

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2015 Château Bauduc Sauvignon Blanc Bordeaux

    France, Bordeaux

Blind. Light to medium gold and going to clear at the rim, a few strong legs, grassy, citrus lemon nose, some gooseberry but some ripe apricot and yellow plum, quite viscous in the mouth, med+ acid.
I had this pegged as a sauvignon, I thought the fruit was a bit ripe and obvious so went for a new world/NZ but didn't think it was Marlborough. The oak foxed me here

  • 2007 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières

Blind. Mid gold colour, savoury nuts, cashews, ripe and quite tropical, some heat here, maybe high alcohol, strong legs, med+ acidity, intense and full in the mouth, stewed apple, more nuts.
On tasting I was going for a full throttle new world Chardonnay, but talking about it with the group honey and Sauternes were mentioned which clicked me straight to Loire Chenin Blanc either Vouvray or Savennieres with a bit of age.

  • 2015 Stein Bremmer Calmont Riesling Spätlese trocken

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Blind. Medium gold, aromatic nose, strong legs, floral, almond, marzipan, citrus, med+ acid, lots of crunchy green apples, lighter alcohol but totally dry and minerally.
I went for a Riesling, probably German and trocken in style

  • 2012 Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Selection

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Blind. Fairly young, plenty of strong kegs, rich plum, creamy oak, black currant nose, more blackcurrant, med+ acid, med tannin, med+ length.
Definitely some Cabernet, but I suspected more merlot in the blend, I went for a Bordeaux blend as it didn't feel too big, ripe or hot, but the plushness and creamy nose should have pointed me elsewhere

  • 2010 Campogiovanni (San Felice) Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Blind. Some age here, bricked so the rim, floral, cherry, bright and aromatic, some nail polish, high tannin, strong legs.
I went for italy and a Sangiovese, discussing the wine and tannins made me change to Nebbiolo. This was surprisingly elegant for a 2010 brunello, I was thinking more Chianti Classico on tasting.

  • 2014 Felton Road Pinot Noir Cornish Point

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Slight bricking at the rim, but this is young and punchy, quite boisterous, ripe pungent cherry with a side of vanilla, med+ acidity and very strong legs.
Clearly a new world Pinot, I was between Central Otago or cooler California, I probably should have got closer to this wine.
