Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2013 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Classique Ampodium

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Reddish violet, good clarity; cranberry, black and white pepper, fresh plum, granite, pretty vanilla shades, slight herb; good acid, fresh, juicy, grilled meat, bacon fat, lighter and more elegant, very refined, cooler vintage; delicious; in Cote Rotie but could not pin down producer, this made sense.

  • 2006 Castello di Verduno Barolo Vigna Massara

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dull crimson maroon core with dull reddish orange rim, Nebbiolo with some age; classic nose, screams Nebbiolo, tar, roses, cedar, dried cherry, sandalwood, layered; very good balance on the palate, others said this was really tannic but I felt this was in a stage where all of its weight was put on and at a point of softening going forward, sweet fruit, sweet tannin, medicinal cherry; very good, classic, tasty, Verduno delivers again.

  • 2009 François Villard Côte-Rôtie La Brocarde

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Darker reddish violet core with lighter rim; some stank, reduced a bit, dark sour cherry, plum, menthol; good density, mineral, very sour fruit reminiscent of Gevrey but a touch too much weight, doesn't scream Syrah but it is a very nice drink.

  • 2004 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Asili

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Maroon core with paler rim; sexy nose, meaty, plush, floral, balsamico, lots of dried orange peel, dark cherry, smoke, sexy, instantly shares its nobility on the nose, complex and luxurious; palate shows great balance, tannins show its youth, fresh acid, sweet fruit; Giacosa but on '07 Castioglione Falletto; this is going to be hard to beat tonight (or most nights).

  • 2008 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

See through crimson, clarity, orange in rim; nutty nose, herbs, aged, tobacco, cedar, autumnal; lots of richness, alcohol, medicinal, cherry liqueur, viscosity; not behaving as I expect a more elegant producer like Fuligni or a younger vintage like 2008, with that said the wine itself is quite tasty.

  • 2008 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Cannubi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

See through bright crimson, orange in rim; high toned nose, cherry, rose, liqueur, slight candy to the fruit, cinnamon, great focus, Burgundian; fine tannin, focused on the palate, sweet fruit and tannin, refined, elegant; still a baby, so bright and feminine for Cannubi; said it had to be P. Scavino or Burlotto.

  • 2009 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Crimson core with orange rim; screams mint, herbaceous, cedar, menthol, sour dried cherry and strawberry, medicinal, fennel; good texture, very savory, tastier than the nose initially suggested, some age, not the balance of a great vintage, tannic; good; was on 2005 Barolo.

  • 2003 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Darker crimson core with orange rim; again classic Nebbiolo nose, sandalwood, orange peel, roses, red cherry, cedar; savory, rich, medicinal, sweet tannin, plush, riper vintage- '07?; probably the best and youngest example of this wine I've had, delicious.

  • 2006 M. Chapoutier Hermitage La Sizeranne

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Dark cloudy core with light maroon rim; nutty, aged, raspberry, fig, almond paste, sweet ripe; CdP for sure- no- then I go '07 Sizeranne- no- at least I'm consistent.

  • 2001 Pio Cesare Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Darker crimson core with paler orange rim; nutty, seemingly oaked Nebbiolo, mahogany, fennel, some age, high toned, high alcohol; sappy, some oak tannin, woody, heavier, glycerin, celery seed; good most days but within the context of tonight's tasting this didn't keep up with others.

  • 2008 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Crimson core with orange rim; a lot of the same characteristics as previous wines, medium age Nebbiolo, medicinal cherry, roses, cedar, great nose; high acid, bright, focused, sour red fruit; good potential, still very young.

  • 2004 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva

    Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto

Dark core with maroon rim; green pepper, sweet red currant, Chile, sweet dense fruit, slight chocolate and mocha, red currants, leaner but a modern plushness, wet earth, green pepper, a creaminess, cinnamon, clove, vegetal; drinking very youthful, really stood out when compared to the Italian theme this evening; mentioned Almaviva but called '08 Montes M- keying on the Carmenere.

  • 2010 Pian dell'Orino Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Darker maroon core with paler rim; good sweet plum to nose, slight sweat, leather, sweet dark cherry, tobacco edge but still about the fruit; good plushness to the tannin, pleasant grip but still very young, smoky cherry, great texture; was in 2010 Barbaresco but this makes sense- pay me my nickel.

Closing

Wow, it wasn't planned this way, but that was an excessive amount of Nebbiolo and Brunello that tasted like Nebbiolo.
Giacosa was unanimous #1
my #2 was the Rostaing because it was so true and a joy to drink
#3 was the Pian dell'Orino
