Introduction

A presentation of the current vintage of small valley and nashwauk by the wine maker Stephen Dow

Flight 1 - bracket one - on arrival (1 Note)

Flight 2 - bracket two - cool climate whites (2 Notes)

Gris was the winner here…

  • 2016 Kaesler Pinot Gris Small Valley

    Australia, South Australia, Adelaide

Medium minus intensity aromas of dusty note, melon, pear skin struggle through what proves to be a moderately dirty glass. Bitter pear, some very fine burr on the mid palate. Medium length. With time a slightly toasty honeyed note as well. Perhaps a little forward (for a year old) but pleasant enough

  • 2016 Kaesler Chardonnay Small Valley

    Australia, South Australia, Adelaide

medium minus intensity aromas of orchard fruit, dusty elements, with a little warmth and agitation some stone fruit sweet spice and butter but the latter two are reined in. More of the same on the palate, lacks acid though and there is a touch of bitterness here as well. The fruit does not really carry very long. young vines perhaps?

Flight 3 - bracket three - lighter reds (2 Notes)

I enjoyed the Pinot but I wouldn't buy it.

  • 2016 Kaesler Pinot Noir Small Valley

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

Sour black cherry backed by plain chocolate, slightly bitter stalky elements but they feel controlled. Touch of cedar here as well as some sweet spice. More savoury on the palate and slightly stalky sour cherry fruit. A touch bitter here but there is a touch of breadth through the mid palate - it gains weight with time in the glass but is still dominated by those sour cherry notes. Hmm.

  • 2013 Nashwauk Tempranillo

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

concentrated red cherry fruit, slight sweet tobacco notes, chocolate and sweet spice. Quite polished fruit. Tobacco note is more of the fore on the palate and the fruit is darker and more berried. Fair amount of glycerol here as well, broad with find tannins. A pleasant well made but, for me, a little innocuous.

Flight 4 - bracket four - mclaren vale shiraz (3 Notes)

For these wines it was quite interesting...The noses implied a different message to the palate. Like using a dating site where the photo is different to the person in question…

  • 2013 Nashwauk Shiraz McLaren Vale

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Oooh, touch of wild ferment funkiness, blackberry over cherry, slightly beefy as well. Richer but just as savoury as expected. It's a bit bigger and more bolshy than I thought it would based on the nose.. Medium minus intensity chalky tannins.

  • 2009 Nashwauk Shiraz Wrecked

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

slightly peppered blackberry fruit, quite fleshy aromas, savoury spice as well. Smells like it's going to taste fantastic - be all fleshy and juicy and quaffable. Alas, it's a bit thicker than I thought it would be, the tannins are quite gritty and grippy, the fruit tends to savoury but does carry a d lovely blackberry cordial note. Over time the fruit seems to raisin a little...It cannot hide it's warmer origins. Nose offers more for me than the palate. Bah.

  • 2010 Nashwauk Shiraz Beacon

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Rich to the point of portiness, chocolate, black fruits, touches or raisins and prunes, vanilla as well as sweet spice on the nose. Tastes like moderately tannic blackberry cough medicine. These tannins are tight and dry down the front of the mouth. I get a sweet vanilla note here as well as a fair amount of alcohol heat. It's a little over extracted for me. Nah.

Flight 5 - bracket five - mclaren vale Cabernet (1 Note)

I'd rather spend another $5-10 and get a good entry level Bordeaux

  • 2014 Nashwauk Cabernet Sauvignon

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

bolshy, big boned, fruit driven Cabernet; blackcurrant tending to raisins. Muted polished oak lends a sweet spiced note. More of the same on the palate but with a tiny touch of herbaceousness and tight, slightly drying, tannins. Medium plus length. Clean, well made but fundamentally forgettable....

Closing

Hmm. Not the greatest tasting I've been to. Of this lot the Pinot Gris and Noir were okay followed by the Shiraz but I feel no great urge to strain my short arms into my deep pockets.
