Introduction

This month's theme was Right Bank Red Bordeaux. All wines were tasted blind except the second starter. Wines are listed in order of my preference.

Flight 1 - Starters (2 Notes)

  • NV Camel Valley Brut

United Kingdom, England, South West, Cornwall

Tasted blind. Nose of chalk, lemon. Round and slightly sweet body (comes across as slightly off-dry?) with apple and lemon curd. Good acidity to balance it out.

  • 2009 Thunevin Mauvais Garçon / Bad Boy

    France, Bordeaux

Brown spice, red berry, and wood notes. Plush, forward body with sweet red/black fruit, tobacco, leather and chocolate. Finishes with fine tannins. Big and a bit simple, but enjoyable.

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

Group order: 2010 Roc de Cambes/2008 Clos L'Eglise (tie), 2009 Le Bon Pateur, 2008 Clos Canon

  • 2010 Roc de Cambes

    France, Bordeaux, Côtes de Bourg

Tasted blind. Spicebox, tar, leather, and a touch of heat on the nose. Dark black fruit, leather, earth all tightly wound. Very nicely balanced, finishes with fine and present tannins. Could use some more time.

  • 2009 Château Le Bon Pasteur

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Tasted blind. Nose of earth, wood spice, and smoke. Very drying on the finish with firm tannins. Lots of delicious, dark fruit on the body. Really tight right now, needs time.

  • 2008 Clos l'Église (Pomerol)

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Tasted blind. Muted nose; not very expressive initially. Took quite some time to start opening up. A little green alongside the red/black fruit. Medium-plus acidity, finishes with fine tannin.

  • 2008 Clos Canon

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Leather, spice, and herbs. Tart fruit, red berry fruit, simple on the palate. Lighter weight body, finishes with fine tannin.

  • 2010 Clos du Clocher

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Tasted blind. Smells a little like shoe polish and baking spice. Soft body, with pretty fruit, earth, potpourri. Drying, grippy tannin to finish.

  • 2008 Château Lucia

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Sweet fruit on the nose mixed with leather and spice. Soft and round palate, very approachable. Nicely balanced with fine, lingering tannins.

  • 2010 Château L'Arrosée

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Spice and wood on the nose. VA; tart with some astringency on the finish. Hidden behind that is some nice red cherry and black currant fruit, though.
