Introduction

Schlumberger tasting at Wine-Ark. A producer that had previously slipped my net so I was interested and, well, excited to try them.

Flight 1 - Bracket one - On arrival (1 Note)

Another enjoyable Alsace Pinot Blanc (one to file in the wines I should probably buy along with the Mader)

  • 2014 Domaines Schlumberger Pinot Blanc Les Princes Abbés

    France, Alsace

Cream, spice, touches of white pepper, live underneath some pear fruit and floral top notes on the nose. Juicy, fleshy and surprisingly flavoursome on the palate with tangy pear and a little apple and mid palate burr. Pretty nice. I sense a little sugar here to lend that fruit sweetness and there is little alcohol warmth on the back palate. (Note - wrong on both of these counts - 1.6g res sugar and 12.35% alcohol). Rather nice.

Flight 2 - Bracket two - Riesling (3 Notes)

the Kitterle is the pick of the bunch.

  • 2014 Domaines Schlumberger Riesling Les Princes Abbés

    France, Alsace

Very slight kerosene over lime, grapefruit, a little cats pee (?), gaminess and gingery spice. Smells like it will be a little sharp on the palate and so it proves. Pointy acidity, medium plus intensity flavours of lime, quite tight with a little warmth on the shortish finish.

  • 2010 Domaines Schlumberger Riesling Saering

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

Medium minus intensity but quite rich none the less, wet clay, earth, lime curd, slightly dusty and leesy notes. With time in the glass, honey and kerosene. Juicy and slightly tart on the palate. It's also a little short for what I'd expect for a grand cru with some gum grip. Lime fruit here as well.

  • 2012 Domaines Schlumberger Riesling Kitterlé

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

Kerosene over peachy tending to tropical fruit, cream and custard apple. Juicy but broad and rich on the palate. It's a little wet as well and the fruit is a little more muted here though it's still present. There is a touch of front of mouth burr as well and it's almost a little chewy in fact. interesting.

Flight 3 - Bracket three - Pinot Gris (2 Notes)

I liked that Kessler but I feel a bit corrupt saying so...

Flight 4 - Bracket four - Gewurztraminer (1 Note)

just the entry level wine in this bracket

  • 2013 Domaines Schlumberger Gewurztraminer Les Princes Abbés

    France, Alsace

Rosewater over rosewater over rosewater over lychee…this is the most liquid Turkish delight nose on a Gewurz I've ever had. There is a touch of bitterness on the nose (yes, I know that is impossible but that is the impression it gives). It's surprisingly juicy and controlled on the palate, again very floral with a little mid - palate burr. medium plus length. I'd this is moving the Alsatian Gewurztraminer paradigm to a more ethereal plain. or. It's just a bit lightweight. take your pick.

Closing

interesting tasting. A couple of tasty wines. None are preposterously over-priced either. "Hmm" would be my overarching impression. Perhaps there is a lack of balance here…or perhaps I'm just being a fussy git. The Kessler Pinot Gris was a bit flabby but pretty enjoyable none the less and the Ktterle Riesling was, in this bracket, handy. How it would fare against other Alsace Rieslings would be another question.
