Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Sine Qua Non The Petition 95 Points

    USA, California

This was a generous contribution from Jim N, nicely chilled, opened for about 30 minutes prior to the first glass. We drank first 2 bottles blind, took a few tries to guess this (with some guidance).

Medium gold color. Citrus zest, white flowers on the nose. Rich and expressive palate of tropical fruits, buttery pineapple, nuts/almonds, mild oak. Nice secondary notes through the mid palate - a nice "oily" texture throughout. Long and layered finish.

This is a blend of Viognier, Rousanne and Chardonnay...which is a first for me. A lot going on with this wine. Still very youthful and fresh, really great now, should go for a while if wanting to cellar. A decant would have been ideal for this bottle...we saved a bit a drank again later in the evening - it was really singing 90 minutes in. Lighter chill and 90 minutes of air time if drinking again. Amazing stuff

  • 1997 Littorai Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Second bottle of the evening, contributed by Jim N. Open for about 30 minutes to slow ox prior to drinking. Drank this one blind as well. dead ringer at this stage for an aged Burgundy (my incorrect guess...)

Medium ruby color, some cloudiness, mild separation. Nose was slightly pungent, dark cherry, damp earth, some wood. Palate still fruity, dusted raspberry, baking spices. Medium weight and finish.

Really well made wine, one of the older CA Pinots I have had, still elegant and expressive. This showed best in the first hour, started to fade a bit later. Fun to drink, past its prime but still very nice

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

One of my contributions, wanted to check in on this, its been a while since I have had an 82 Bdx. Decanted for about an hour before we drank.

Rich purple color at the core, some separation at the rim. Nose had an unfortunate taint in it, slight but noticeable. Stopping short of calling a flawed bottle as the palate was not effected. Picking up on the nose dark fruits, earth, graphite. Palate was expressive with plums, cassis, dried black cherry. Tannins sweetened, elegant texture, long finish.

Will hold off rating given the taint on the nose....luckily I have a couple more bottles so will get a better account of this next time. Looking past that flaw, the wine is still youthful for its age, well stored bottles could go for another 10+ years... always fun to check in on the epic 82 vintage.

  • 2003 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select 96 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Last wine of the evening, one of my contributions. Decanted for about 45 minutes before drinking.

Dense purple core color, mild rim seraration. Nose of blackberry, plum, graphite. Plate showing dark berries, cassis, savory notes. Secondary notes of cedar and dark chocolate... Rich mouthfeel and texture, long and layered finish.

This seems to be in it's prime drinking zone, I would say fully mature with the legs to go another 7-10 years. Spectacular cab (as expected from SHS). My WOTN...
