  • 2007 Ovid Experiment A2.7

At home with some casual chicken piccata. Bottles in my cellar from release. Decanted for about 30 minutes, drank over 2 hours.

Bright, clear ruby color (almost like cough syrup?). Nose showing blackberry, dark currant nose. Palate showing sweet cherry, blueberry, red currants, tart rhubarb, herbs. A lot going on here, bramble and blue fruit persists with a pronounced sweetness through the finish. Tannins softened. Full body, long finish (60+ seconds).

This was clearly better than my notes from 2015. I was not impressed at the time, perhaps the wine was in a closed place at the time. This was open and expressive after a relatively short decant. The combination of Cab Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon has produced an interesting and vibrant wine. At a great spot at this point - drink now if you have it, should drink at this level for a bit.

  • 2011 Realm Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard

At home with some pizza, this one in my cellar from release, circa 2013. PnP, drank half the bottle over 3 hours, the balance the following day.

Medium, clear garnet color, some separation. Nose of dark fruit, tobacco. Plate of black cherry, blueberry, cassis, cocoa, fig and tobacco. Some sweetness through the mid palate. Smooth texture, tannins smoothed and sweetened. Medium body, medium/long finish.

Surprisingly fresh and vibrant - I say that only as expectations for the 2011 vintage have been set lower - but the wines I have had are not reflective of the negative view of the vintage. To be fair, they don't have the tannic structure to go 30+ years (ie 2013s), but this one is in a great spot 13 years in and should drink at this level for a while. I don't think it improves much from here. All in, great wine from a great vintner

  • 2003 Two Hands Shiraz Ares

At home with Margherita pizza, last tasting 2015...in my cellar from shortly after release. One of those "forgotten bottles", thought it was time (maybe past) to get another one open. PnP, very soft cork, broke on way out.

Dark garnet core, separating at the edges. Nose showing, dark fruits, herbs, garrigue, violets. Palate of blackberry, boysenberry, blue fruits, savory, spice/cloves, herbs, vanilla. A lot going on...blackberry thought the mid palate, some heat persists into the finish. Full body, long finish.

Hitting all the classic Syrah/Shiraz notes. Nicely aged, elegant, rich and "savage" Rhone profile. High alcohol is the notable flaw at this point. Very good now, was probably better in its first 10 years ...Would drink up, not likely to improve from here.

2/17/2019 7:50:00 AM - Re: the 2001 S-W Auslese: I'm sure I didn't decant the bottle from my note of a year ago. But I do suspect it was open and consumed over several hours and thus got some aeration in the bottle. My sense is it's still an adolescent Riesling and doesn't require too much TLC to wake up. I would certainly open in advance and let it warm up a bit from fridge temps though.

11/19/2017 5:48:00 PM - Thank you for the reply. Agreed on the accessibility of the 12's compared to the 13's. I find the 13 Rattlesnake (also in your cellar) is a contender for a 50 year wine. Although it is funny, the 2014's are so good and flirtatious early on, it sort of makes you forget about how good the 13 is going to be in 10-15 years. I digress, based on your comments on the Aiken, I think I will let it go the ten year mark and try it.

11/19/2017 2:59:00 PM - Walkerjfw, noticed you also have the 2012 Aiken PNV in your cellar. Was wondering if you had a chance to try it before purchase or what year you would consider opening? 2012 has been accessible, but I only having two bottles, I want to make sure I drink it under favorable conditions. Thanks in advance.

1/28/2017 8:10:00 PM - We seem to have lots of wines in common...I used to work near Princeton and have eaten at many of the restaurants you mention in your notes. Would like to meet at some point and try something forgotten from the cellar, always fun! Dave (oldwines) dtpwineadvisors.com

3/2/2016 11:39:00 AM - Saw your recent note on the '08 Colgin Syrah, thanks for posting. Sounds like you and I have similar tastes. We (wife and I) live in NYC and have family in Princeton, so would be happy to meet up for drink sometime. Always good to meet folks in the area. Cheers!

10/29/2013 7:43:00 AM - Yes, I think there was a small corkage fee but they do allow it. It's so common in NJ, most restaurants need to accommodate. The Cos is great now, worth opening if you have it. We drank next to an 89 Lafite, which was the star of the night.

10/28/2013 8:06:00 PM - Saw your recent tasting note for Cos 1995, a wine we have in common. I had no idea that Verve would let you bring your own bottle in; they've got decent food, but a mediocre wine list, so this is very good news indeed!
