Tasted double blind in Chave Hermitage blanc flight. Flight seemed so Northern Rhone, with this wine's oily richness making it particularly clear. Great concentration and richness with a ripe fruit notes and charming balance. Good now, seemingly emerged from its long slumber, but with upside from here.

Tasted double blind in Chave Hermitage blanc flight. Flight clearly Northern Rhone, with this showing so nicely, shockingly so for the vintage. Wow, so much better than the last time tasted several months ago. Rich and concentrated with lots of fresh and dried apricot, toasted walnuts and great balance.

Tasted double blind in Chave Hermitage blanc flight. Flight seemed so Northern Rhone, and this wine started rich but then seemed to shorten and finish abruptly.

Tasted double blind in Chave Hermitage blanc flight. Flight seemed so Northern Rhone, and this wine really seemed to be completely backward and inaccessible - the classic "lull."

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. I haven't tasted this in a decade, and cellar time has been kind to this wine. Black plum and green pepper with lots of tannins, but clearly well resolved. Very good depth and length. Start through finish are very enjoyable, slightly less exciting finish. I certainly liked this wine, but not as much as group, which ranked it #2 tonight.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. Very similar to the 1986 in the previous glass, so clearly the start of a vertical (in my mind). Just slightly richer and more persistent, less structured. I thought this was the 4th or 5th best wine of the flight, and the group ranked it #4. Much better than another bottle from last year.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. An odd bottle that seemed inconsistent with the flight, and very inconsistent with previous bottles. Similar profile to the 1986 and 1988 in the first two glasses, just so much lighter and thinner, with a slightly bitter finish. My least favorite wine of the flight, group's #7. Clearly a shadow of what this wine can be.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. Ripe black fruit throughout, very rich and very dense. Clearly complete and well balanced. Lots of everything. I enjoyed this wine tonight more than ever before. My favorite of the flight, group's #1 as well.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. Most spice-driven of the wines, so showing more new oak, but also lots of nuance. Interesting mint chocolate chip hints made me really think whole flight was New World. Oops. Great 95+ point nose, then very good flavors. My 2nd favorite wine of the flight, group's #3.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. Very similar to the previous wine (which turned out to be Togni 1991), just slightly more firm and coarse, even with a sweeter note. Very good+ length. Probably upside from here. My 6th favorite of the flight, group's #5.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. Once again this was so similar to the prior two wines with spice-a-plenty and an almost sweet richness. Moderate power, excellent balance, very good length. My 3rd favorite of the flight given its wonderful balance, group's #6.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. The flight clearly seemed to transition here to younger wine. Dense and meaty, but firmly tannic and imperfectly balanced for now. Very good raw materials, so I may be underestimating this wine's 5-10-year potential. My 9th favorite wine of the flight, group's 10th (last) place wine.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. Black fruit in a slightly lighter style from start through middle, but with a firm finish. Very surprised when unveiled. Needs time. I ranked this #7 in the flight, group ranked it #6.

Tasted double blind in what turned out to be a Lynch-Bages/ Togni flight. Slightly sweet fruit, but also very firm and backward with signs of mountain fruit that were inconsistent with the last nine wines (so confusing). Needs time, but limited upside. My 8th favorite, group's #8 as well.

Double blind alongside the 1990. Easily my favorite wine of the night. Seemed so young and vibrant with perfect juxtaposition of acidity, botrytis, ripe fruit, concentration and other good stuff. This wine has never disappointed.

Double blind alongside the stunning 1989. This has often been an enigmatic wine. some times great, sometimes not. Tonight's was good. Nicely aged, while also light and very elegant, but somehow missing gravitas.

Lots of power with very good concentration. some of the sharp edges that don't thrill me with Extra Brut, but lots of complexity here. At least as good as the 2002 Brut tasted last week, probably even slightly better.

2002 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Nicolas François Flawed
France, Champagne
Surprisingly rather oxidative and advanced, this was the wine I expected to be stand out in the flight, but turned out to be the one disappointment.

2002 Pommery Champagne Cuvée Louise Brut 92 Points

Ripe apple everywhere, with hints of Asian spice, dried apricot, spring flowers and lemon curd. Very good balance. The wine of the flight that positively surprised us all.
