Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2004 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Purple/ruby colour with a full pink rim; scented nose : pleasing dark berry fruits, mostly black currants, some spice – a bit intoxicating; clean, well structured; mix of red and black fruits – black currants and a touch of cherry; tannins fairly pronounced but are muted to an extent by the up front fruit; easy finish, where the fruit lingers on the palate; attractive wine. Surprising showing for such a young wine.

  • 2003 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Production of 31 Hl/hectare; dark ruby – deeper rim; aromas showing herbs, tobacco, spice, some cedar, blackberry and currants; supple on the palate, with a tremendous amount of fruit that totally masks the tannins; excellent concentration; big and powerful in style; blackberry and black currant fruit stays on the palate and extends out to a very long finish. A top notch wine !

  • 2002 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dark ruby – bit fuzzy – thin rim; light pleasing nose – scented – berries with a floral edge; ripe berry fruit – black currants – light tannins but they ride along with the fruit; elegant styling; finishes with the fruit and tannins. A pleasing wine to drink.
We also drank this at the Thursday evening BBQ and at lunch on Friday.

  • 2001 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Much darker than the 2002 – opaque purple/ruby, with a wide pink rim; pungent on the nose – smoky oak and roasted nuts, along with intense black currant fruit; fresh tasting – round and supple; large concentration of currant fruit, but the tannins show through – they’re not aggressive, however; finishes with the fruit and tannins holding until the end.

  • 2000 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Black/ruby colour – fully opaque in the glass; warm smoky aromas, but noticeable fruit, together with a series of spices, toast, some cedar and vanillan oak; supple and harmonious on the palate; great concentration of black currant fruit, together with some blackberry; exceptional balance; very long finish – fruit is persistent to the end, reviving each time it begins to wane. Very fine !

  • 1990 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Attractive mahogany ruby colour – amber rim; bouquet a mix of spice, jammy black currants, mocha coffee rise in the nostrils; ripe black currant fruit; excellent structure where the fruit holds on the firm frame; sweet ripe black currant flavours – round and rich on the palate, but with sufficient acidity to sharpen the fruit; firm finish, likely due to this acidity, with the fruit lingering.

  • 1989 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Mahogany – deep colour – wide amber rim; slowly developing bouquet – nice fruit but not as complex as the 1990; high acidity shines above the other elements, but there is an abundance of black currant fruit to coat the palate nicely; tannins come through in the finish – a bit drier than one might hope for.

  • 1988 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Another deep mahogany colour – wider rim; bouquet reflects cedar and some smoky oak, along with berry fruit; elegantly styled; more in balance than the 1989; broader spectrum on the palate – black currant fruit once again with spice edges – black coffee – a liqueur like note or two; nice harmony, with no element standing out except for the fruit; finishes attractively. This isn’t a heavyweight wine, but it’s easy to drink.

  • 1986 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Medium ruby – thin rim; deep flowing bouquet of baked currant fruit – toasted fresh bread – roasted almonds; fat and full on the palate – thick texture; mouthcoating black currant fruit, with the tannins well beneath this huge concentration of fruit; excellent structure; long finish, with the fruit over everything else. Excellent to drink now, but has very good future prospects, too.

  • 1985 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

deep mahogany colour – wide amber/caramel rim; broad mix of roasted nuts – tobacco – spice – chocolate caramel and dark berry fruit coming through in the bouquet; warm, black currant jam in the flavours; excellent balance, although the tannins do show in the fruit driven finish.
This was much better at dinner on Saturday – seemed more harmonious – felt the frame held the fruit better. Partnered with Jurassie, Vigneron and Marbier cheeses it proved to be another outstanding pairing.
