France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Very floral start with tropical notes, lemon curd and lots of concentration. Rich and very forward, slightly short of acidity, but making that up with chalky minerality. In its peak drinking window now. One person thought this past its peak, but that might reflect a preference for mostly younger wines.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Black fruit with lots of earth, slightly dirty. One person thought it corked, but I found it consistent with the earthy (maybe bretty, almost moldy) character from some older Ponsot that never fully came together. So sad, in contrast to the 1990 in the next glass.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Open two hours before serving. Very ripe and powerful, but still clearly so backward. Hinting at greatness, but still somewhat reluctant to really provide pleasure right now. I would cellar further, which is rare for a 1990.
2002 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 94 Points
France, Champagne
Apple chiseled out of mineral. So long and powerful, teasing us with its potential.
