  • 2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Every time I drink this, it just charms my pants off. The seamless and silky marriage of elegance and intensity, subtlety and power, all wrapped in rich 2006 brioche-ness, is just to swoon in. Marvellous now, long life. Comtes de Champagne on this form is one of the greatest values in the entire world of sparkling wine.

  • 2011 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Meix Chavaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

For Roulot the situation isn’t as mad as it is for Coche-Dury, but the price on the wine list at Paul Bocuse still represented a 35% discount on the secondary market price in London. And it is a nice wine too. Beautifully balanced and harmonious, silk and lemon curd, apple and pear, perfectly integrated oak is just noticeable, seamless and flowing, hint of mineral reduction, pure and precise flavours, hint of walnut, good length. It does not have the power of a riper vintage or the mineral tension and energy of a Premier Cru, but it is a testament to the flawless wine making at Domaine Roulot. Perfect with Salade de Homard à la Française and Quenelle de Brochet aux Écrevisses, Sauce Nantua.

  • 2013 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Coteaux de Bassenon 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

From the Côte Blonde, 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier. Fresh red berry fruit, elegant and pure style, modern but refined, spicy new oak but no stems, perfect weight (12.5% ABV), violets and slate, polished tannins without any sense of dryness, mineral energy, still a bit tight; long and well-balanced finish. A delightful expression of vigneron and vintage. Accompanied both the Loup en croûte feuilletée, sauce Choron and the cheeses admirably.

  • NV Grande Chartreuse Chartreuse V.E.P. Verte 95 Points

    France

From Jeroboam. Similar in style to the normal Chartreuse Verte, but it is both deeper and more refined and the herbal expression seems to have much greater precision and definition. Rich and gentle, enveloping palate, silky-sweet and the 54% ABV are barely noticeable there - even if they leave quite a kick on the finish with a touch of liquorice. Compared to the standard version the mark-up is considerable, but I understand why.
