Abeja Comparative Tasting (Holiday Weekend)

For Holiday Weekend 2017, Abeja invited guests to a comparative tasting consisting of 2 vintages of 4 wines; one made by John Abbott, and one made by Dan Wampfler & Amy Alvarez-Wampfler.

It was a nice treat to try these side-by-side!

• 2016 Abeja Chardonnay

  USA, Washington

  Pear, green apple, minerals, zest. Nice round creaminess on the palate. Fresh acidity. Fuller bodied, but nicely balanced.

• 2012 Abeja Chardonnay

  USA, Washington

  Apple, lemon zest, and hints of smoke/spice. Creamy, soft and delicate body, with lemon curd and minerals. Lovely, fresh finish.

• 2015 Abeja Merlot

  USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

  Toast and chocolate on the nose. Blackberry and black cherry on the palate. Still young.

• 2012 Abeja Merlot

  Soft and delicate, time has treated it well. Cocoa, chocolate and dark fruit on the palate. Soft, fine and delicate tannins. Great balance.

• 2014 Abeja Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

  USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

  Nose of leather, earth, dust, and spice. Dark black fruit, plum and tea on the palate. Finishes with fine tannins and nice balanace.

  USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

  Just lovely right now. Soft, elegant cab with lots of leather and spice. Lingering finish with soft, fine grained tannins.

  USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

  A touch savory on the nose, rounded out with wood and earth. Black fruits, dark and brooding. Tight still.

• 2012 Abeja Cabernet Sauvignon Heather Hill Walla Walla Valley

  USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

  Tobacco, spice, plum, cassis; lots of black fruit. Firmer tannins, still tight and structured. Nice complexity, but definitely can use some more time.
