Introduction

Last day in Bordeaux (I didn't count Sunday's journey home as no wine was involved) with a visit to Cite du Vin (after the U Boat pens) and then supper at the Intercontinental at Ramsey's 2 Michelin starred restaurants private room

Flight 1 - Day thirteen - bracket one - cite du vin (1 Note)

Me and Michelle went to the simply superb U boat pens then scrambled over to meet the others at the Cite du Vin. Ticket price came with a free glass of grog so I got something a little unusual

  • 2013 PP Orahovica Frankovka

Croatia, Slavonia & Danube, Slavonija, Orahovica-Slatina

Green notes, smoky backed by sweet red berries and cherries. There is also a slight candy floss element…It's similarly fruit forward on the palate with a touch of savoury, almost peppery, spice and fine, slightly drying, sandy tannins.

Flight 2 - Day thirteen - bracket two - supper (5 Notes)

Supper in the private dining room was a treat, after sad goodbyes to everyone, especially Letitia and Elodie, John and I went for a little glass of fizz...well, a bottle in fact.

  • 2014 Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Montlouis-sur-Loire Remus

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire

With time in the glass honey notes grow to join citrus, especially lemon, and apple & subtle spice. This isn't as weighty as the last couple of bottles I've had and sits more in the Vouvray than Savenniere space for me. Tastes great but a lousy food match here.

  • 2014 Clos des Lunes Lune Blanche

    France, Bordeaux

Very Sauv Blanc dominant Bordeaux blend based on my previous experiences; bit of cats pee, lees cheesiness and palate breadth, sharp acidity. By itself it's a bit meh but with the food it shines.

  • 2009 Domaine Trapet Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

From magnum. Rich, blackberry, polished oak, earthy with a little stalky element as well. Finely tannic with a little burr on the tongue and exceedingly long. Initially shows some red berry but this disperses and the oak integrates over time. In fact this wine gets better and better with more time...sliding to a powerful but elegant experience which, after about three hours, borders on the sublime.

  • 2001 Vieux Château Certan

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

From magnum. Berry and funky initially over plummy, savoury spices with touches of rhubarb and beetroot which lend the wine quite an earthy aspect. On the palate, it's sweetly fruit with quite fine tannins and a little warmth on the long finish, joined to leathery touches and a little sour bois. I suspect this bottle is a little forward

  • NV Perrier-Jouët Champagne Belle Epoque

    France, Champagne

Generously frothy and fresh, bread, citrus, very slight cherry notes...a perfect night cap

Closing

Both of these events should have been superb but the Cite du Vin was a bit too busy and the supper was, from a food perspective, quite disappointing. Wine was stunning though in the latter case. And so bye bye Bordeaux...
