Introduction

This started out as a couple couple wanting to watch Sideways and a few other couple piggybacking onboard to make a party of the theme. And what a great theme it was. We had 5 couples join in for a splendid evening full of artisan pizzas based off the A16 recipe. Fresh ingredients, creativity, and expert execution was the key. It did not hurt that we had great wines of one of my all time favorite movies. Well done everyone!!

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • NV Marc Hébrart Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Very pale salmon color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes plus. I love this; have not had for a awhile. but this is so balanced and even handed, strawberry cream, strawberry chiffon palate, elegant and fine. Wonderful QPR.

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 164eme 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Well, is this good or what. You know you've enter the realm of greatness immediately. Certainly this gives away its pedigree, but it also comes off as youthful, playful, and just a tease. 93+(+)pts. I fully expect this to evolve over the next 3 to 5 years.

  • 2005 Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. I'm impressed by how this is showing. So many of the '05's just don't want to come out and play, and this even despite its humble village label, might also be expected to do the same. Nonetheless, this is simply excellent, a depth of fruit, more dark than red, earth, balance and a freshness with the depth. Really good and only going to get better. 92+pts.

  • 2009 Faiveley Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Geez, not bad for a lowly pizza wine. This shows very good fruit, lots of minerality, and plenty of tart dark red fruits, yet sleek tannins that are rather forgiving, Very tasty. 91+ to 92pts.

  • 2002 Domaine Roblet-Monnot Volnay 1er Cru Pitures 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an 30 minutes plus. This is in a pretty good place, sour cherry, toasted oak, a bit of scorched earth mineral, and a medium body with a very even handed disposition.

  • 2013 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Rock solid, more typical of what you'd expect from the vintage, and I want to give this more time to really show. Tart, sour red fruits, spice driven, subtle earth, with a medium body. I'd like this to go 3 years before revisiting - easier said than done. 91+(+)pts.

  • 2012 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard 93 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over an hour plus. Well, this just goes to reinforce my thinking after Leo's recent bottle. This is on the cusp of something special. Really, it probably is already there, but you know where this can go. A beautiful aromatic nose with dried earth, fine spices, florals, and bright red berry fruits. Not as precocious now, and just showing class. Stands a clear notch over the '13.

  • 2011 Big Table Farm Pinot Noir Wirtz Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Same bottle as Bellissimo. Agree wholeheartedly. While I think most of the '11's have gotten to where they are starting to shine, that is not a given. This is definitely lighter in body, more tight overall, though less so on the nose, a mix of red fruits, tart, pomegranate, currant, tart berry, tannins are largely in check, but do not go unnoticed either. It will be fun to see this in another couple of year to see if it continues to evolve as expected.

  • 2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne 96 Points

    France, Champagne

I don't know who's bright idea it was to open '02 Dom after a gazillion pinots, but damn, it was genius - thanks Dave for opening this gem. Ok, where to start, it's '02, it's Dom, do you really need anything more. Fine, this is aromatic, gorgeous fine bead and creamy mousse, power and sophistication, toast, fresh baked bread, pear, intensity, brilliant minerality, impeccably balanced. Thank you sire, may I have another... and another...oh for pete's sake, just back up the truck. A wine I continue to adore.
