Introduction

The 2nd Sunday group gathered for our regular double blind tasting. For this group, we are presented a couple of double blind warm ups before the main flight. The warm ups are discussed & unveiled before moving on to the themed main flight. We spent forty five minutes or so tasting and evaluation the eight wines for the main flight before ranking the wines and then making guesses as to what we were tasting. Wines are ranked 1-8, one point for each place, and then unveiled from last place to first place. After the tasting, dinner is served with the additional wines brought by the group, nonblind. For this tasting we had twelve tasters and the cost was $35.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (2 Notes)

  • 2015 Louis Jadot Mâcon-Villages 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Villages

Double blind. Billowy white fruit and mineral notes. Light body, orchard fruit and tropical tones. Bright acidity. Drank more like a pinot blanc than chardonnay.

  • 2015 Château La Roque Pic St. Loup Cuvée Les Vieilles Vignes de Mourvedre 90 Points

France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Pic St. Loup

Double blind. Deep color. Dark fruit, pepper and spice, slight meaty note; subtle tapenade quality too. Chewy tannins. Flavors of dark fruit, pepper and spice; jammy in a good way. Nice finish. My initial thought was northern Rhone, but I quickly moved on and guessed Languedoc blend as it reminded me a good bit of thr Puech-Haut Cuvee Prestige.

Flight 2 - Main flight (8 Notes)

This was a fairly easy flight to determine what they were not- I was quickly able to toss out pinot and other "light" varieties, but after a short while it became difficult to figure out what they were given what I had eliminated. Often times when I find myself in that situation the wine ends up being tempranillo or malbec and it was fairly easy to eliminate tempranillo too, so I guessed malbec. They were definitely not new world so I guessed this was a flight of wines form Cahors.

  • 2011 Domaine La Suffrene Bandol Cuvée Les Lauves 87 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

Double blind. Dark color. Meaty dark fruit and spice aromas. Firm tannins, with flavors of dark berry fruit and spice, with spice continuing through the finish. Develops a bit of a bouillon-like note which is a bit distracting.
