An easy afternoon with close friends

Introduction

In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, knowing our own wines. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that revealed. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought. In fact this easy setting where we taste the wines several times over 4 – 6 hours is the ultimate way to get a good impression of a wine.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 1986 Château Giscours 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Beautiful complex bouquet with clearly black currants. In the taste black currant juice, a bit leather, bitter, sweet and vanilla. Soft and good, but a bit drying tannin. Nice aftertaste, slightly bitter, but not so long.

  • 1975 Château Giscours

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Dark carmine. Very mature and little sweet bouquet. Creamy taste with a lot of (too) old acidity. Still in good balance, but too smooth. The aftertaste is long but not inspiring. This wine is a caricature of what it was 10 years ago. Together with the 1978 this wine belonged to my favourite Giscours and even Margaux. As you understand this wine is at the end of its life, but I expect it to last at about the same level for another 10 years. Because it was absolutely beautiful in the past I do not score in in CT. If I would do it for the quality at this moment it would be around 76
Before posting this I see that my opinion differs a lot from the other TN's. The scores I find here are about the same (or even lower) than my scores 10 years ago. You might think my bottle was an off bottle, but I doubt that at the moment. I followed the evolution of this wine and drank it at least 7 times. If I find my older notes I will publish them here as well.

  • 1998 Château Giscours 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Dark purple. A lot of butter in the bouquet, black and red fruits and a little reductive flavors. A lot of sweet blackberries and black currants in the taste. Loaded with bitterness and tannin, which makes it a rustic wine. Good glass, but still much too young. Wait at least 4 – 5 years.

Oak is the dominant part of the bouquet. In the taste a large amount of acidity and bitterness.

  • 1983 Château Giscours

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Light carmine with a brown edge. Barnyard, butter, high acidity and a little toasted in the fairly light bouquet. The taste is smooth and soft but the acidity plays the leading part. The opinions were divided. Strangely enough the persons who like their wines as young as possible thought it was great. The rest agreed that it was more exiting than the 1975, but too old now.

  • 1985 Château Sociando-Mallet 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Beautiful complex bouquet with sweetness and good oak. The taste also has some sweetness, but good black currant juice, bitterness and very good tannin. It is mature and great! Long aftertaste with good tannin. Can last for many more years. Great wine!
