Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2002 Soter Pinot Noir Beacon Hill

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Gag. Oak. Is. Killing. Me. Truly awful.

  • 2000 La Castellada Collio Ribolla Gialla

    Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Collio

Wonderful resin and pine forest nose. Straw colour with great clarity. Salty butter and cedar on the palate with dried apricots and almonds. Creamed finish, but very drying. Delicious. Continued to hold and improve for a several hours. A beautiful example of the type and outstanding.

  • 1991 Louis Jadot Romanée St. Vivant

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Slightly pale at the rim, but not oranged. Light nose with sous-bois and damp mushroom. Very light on the palate, smooth and finessed. Dried cherry, lemon peel and currant. Gained weight over time and developed nicely bodied tannins. Meyer lemon notes, ginseng and more noticable mushroom. Light, but good length of finish. Continued to grow and express over time. Definitely at a good point to drink, but clearly will go much longer. Delicious wine and a more than passable expression of RSV by the end.

  • 1995 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Valbuena 5°

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Not very good. Browning in colour and very hazy. Toasty nose, very acidic upfront and strong stemmy notes. Underlying dark cherries and bergamot/tea, but subsumed by tannins and very bad notes. Not enjoyable. A sip the next day actually caused me to gag.

  • 2001 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Intense mocha nose that persisted for a long time. Rich fruit and a bit too-too, but very tasty. Would be delicious with grilled meats.

  • 2002 Peju Province Winery Cabernet Franc

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A pumped-up Chinon, but not quite a right bank Bordeaux and certainly not your typically nasty CA CF. Earthy, nice fruit and an easy finish. One of the best CA CFs I have had.

  • 2002 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Eiswein

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Crisp and bright nose with lemongrass. Sharp acidity and great sweetness. Not complex, but very nice honey-ed notes that linger on the lips. Nice balance, not overly sweet. Very nice.
