Introduction

The steaks were great regardless of what Jason says. And certainly a damn sight better than the mac and cheese or ramen noodles I might have had otherwise.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Inglenook Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Cask 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

While this was clearly on the back slope of development, it did offer a nice look at old Cali Cabs. When I decanted it, I was a bit worried as it appeard brown, but in the glass it was purple fading to orange edges. The nose was cedary with a salty note - iodine and beef blood are good descriptors. It was fairly smooth from the get go, with more pruny, dried fruit and leather notes. After some time in the glass, the alcohol was fairly evident, but a fresh pour revealed more balance and life. Better than I'd expected, and everything one could hope for from aged mid-range wine of questionable provenance.

  • 1987 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

The only other old Mondavi reserve I've had is the 91, which was a benchmark wine for me. This was at least as good as that, and has PLENTY of life left. It had to believe this is 18 years old from appearance or aroma. It has waves of coffee, pine, and thyme. While it didn't have the graphite and forest floor of older Bordeaux, it would not have been out of place in a Bordeaux line-up. Load of cassis, and super structure with tannins in balance with the fruit - this is a complete wine. Mouthfeel is what sets wines apart for me, and this is just seamless. It improved over the couple of hours we had it open, and probably was still improving when I had to go home. I trust Jason enjoyed the rest. Thanks for sharing it with me!

It's a shame Traey didn't get to taste, but I know she'll be back at it latter this year. It was a pleasure dining and hanging out with y'all, and I hope I can reciprocate sometime soon.
