Introduction

Teams are disappearing from the World Cup faster than a toupée in a hurricane. This week's country is no exception but there is still hope for them to show their metal at our tasting table.

Time to polish up your castenets. This week, its Spanish Week in the Dojo.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

Some whites , even more reds and a lot of concentration. Lets see if we can blind taste these beauties to the right time. grape and place.

  • 2014 La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Rioja Blanco

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

    Tasted Blind

    A: Pale lemon
N: Apple, yeast, white flowers, candied pear (jolly rancher), chamomile, grilled/burnt peach and something oily or waxy. Medium (+) nose.
P: Medium (+) acid, dry, high alcohol, medium (+) intensity and medium bitter finish.
C: BLIC? Very Good Quality. Short on the finish for me but really interesting flavors. $61.

    GUESSES:
    Verdejo

    MISTAKES:
Thought that there was phenolic bitterness on the finish and so led me to verdejo but i should have recognized that oiliness that i often dislike in this Viura grape.

Grapes were garnacha blanca, viura, marsanne, rousanne and viognier. Rhone meets Spain in a bottle.

  • 2016 Nanclares y Prieto Albariño Dandelión 86 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

    Tasted Blind(ish)

    A: Pale lemon-green
N: Anise, pear, white peach, lime, wet stone, pineapple heart, touch of banana/gum arabic (but only after someone else mentioned it). Medium (-) nose.
P: Dry (on the finish, plenty of residual sugar while you drink), high acid, medium (+) alc (13.5%), medium (+) body, intensity and finish.
C: $23. Its ok. Made for early drinking, Very good quality wine but just not a fan of the style.

i brought it and knew what it was but i didn't get the phenolic bitterness that one might expect on this grape. Perhaps hidden by the RS?

  • 2015 Comando G La Bruja de Rozas

    Spain, Madrid, Vinos de Madrid

    Tasted Blind

    A: Pale ruby
N: Dust, violet, iodine, rose, licorice, clove, dried cranberry, prune, pepper, nutmeg. Medium (+) intensity. Fully developed.
P: As aroma. Dry, high acid, tannin and alcohol (14.5%), medium (+) verging on full body, medium (+) intensity and just a medium (+) finish
C: BLIC? High alcohol was rather well disguised. Decent balance here with ticks elsewhere. I think its Very good to outstanding quality wine and a bargain at $25. Still got structure to last you another 5+ years but drinking well now.

Granite soils at 850m altitude. Certainly helped the acidity.

  • 2014 Atalayas de Golban Ribera del Duero Torre de Golbán Crianza

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    Tasted Blind

    A: Medium purple
N: Cherry, blueberry, plum, chocolate, nuts, baking spice, coffee, vanilla. Medium (+) intensity.Youthful.
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, tannin, full body, medium (+) intensity, medium finish with high alcohol (14.5%).
C: BLIC? Not complex but Very Good quality wine. I would lay this baby down for 5+ years and let some tertiaries come out to play.

    GUESSES:
Guessed this was Ribera del Duero. Pretty dull + barrel seems to be my tell for all temperanill/tinto fino. At least the fruit is more interesting than Rioja.

Fell into a guess of Priorat. The DUSTY VIOLET thing seems to be the giveaway.
