Introduction

This bad dog has been getting excited at auctions again - ostensibly to stock the cellar for bday lunches but really because, well, why not?

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1970 Château Lafon-Rochet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

From Coravin. After carefully wiping away the detritus of the previous 46 years cellaring the cork top proved to be reasonably pristine (though the entire appeared fully saturated). On the nose an almost ethereal, filigree blackcurrant note with old saddle leather, mushrooms, dusty spice shelf and dry farmhouse. On the palate the wine is juicy to the point of sharpness but by no means volatile, the ghost of talc-textured tannic burr on the tongue and a little warmth on the finish. Flavours are as the nose. Fully mature and to be consumed soon...

  • 1981 Château Calon-Ségur

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

From Coravin. Fully saturated cork that looks to have bled considerably in the past. Oooh, a bit of disturbing cellar stink gives way to biscuity baked cherry and apple (?), sweet spice, some earthy and a touch of volatile acidity as well as some dried orange peel. With time some leather as well. On the palate, well, the bad stuff first - that cellar stink note and the VA are here but, fortunately, not enough for me to call this flawed as the other elements are also present and more materially so. The tannins are discernibly drying but silkily textured and the whole travels very long. Kind of nice.

  • 1995 Château Lafon-Rochet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

From Coravin. Bold, earthy, leathery, black hued fruit, touches of brambles, farmyard and a beguiling savoury meatiness on the nose. In the mouth it's dense, savoury, juicy and tannic Long finish with similar fruit flavours to the nose. Arguably a touch rustic but none the worse for that. Yum.

  • 2005 Delas Frères Cornas Chante-Perdrix

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

From Coravin. Polished oak toast, blackberry, liquorice, touches of black olives and baked earth and herbs. Clove and slight nutmeg. More of the same on the palate but more savoury with plenty of alcohol warmth and surprisingly soft tannins that lend a little chalkiness to the medium plus length finish. Hmm

  • 2015 Maison les Alexandrins Cornas

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

From Coravin. Very whole berry/jubey blackberry over black pepper, baked earthy and tapenade and a fair heft of funk. More of the same on the palate with that funky peppery note leading and a bold tannic grip. Finishes with some alcohol warmth. Nice.

Yeah, that was nearly as much fun as one person can have by themselves…
