  • 2006 Friedrich Becker Spätburgunder Trocken 87 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

(Large generic Riedel tasting glasses) Recently bottled barrel sample. Nice nose, big fruit, good complexity and nice finish. Very clean with the fruit showing through cleanly, if a little simple at this young age. Definately better than most basic Burgundies I've had from major producers and as good if not better than many village level wines as well. $19!

  • 2005 Friedrich Becker Spätburgunder "B" 90 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

(Large generic Riedel tasting glasses) Recently bottled barrel sample. Big complex nose. Big complex red minerally fruit. Very good acid. Great finish. Really good purity and complexity in the fruit. This is an unusually high quality wine at this age and price ($29). This guy knows how to make pinot. Better than many 1er Crus from major Burgundy producers I've had.

  • 2005 Friedrich Becker Sankt Paul Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs 97 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

(Large generic Riedel tasting glasses) WOW! Huge, dirty, terrior-filled, complex, penetrating, haunting nose. Deep, deep, unbelievably complex fruit with layer upon layer of haunting nuance. Long, long complex intense finish. One of the best three Pinots I've ever had (I haven't had DRC or Leroy, but I have had dozens of Gr Crus from other producers, so take it for what it's worth). Simply the best Pinot not from Burgundy I've ever had. Better than most Gr Crus. A truly world class wine! A revelation.

  • 2005 Rudolf Fürst Spätburgunder Tradition 88 Points

    Germany, Franken

(Large generic Riedel tasting glasses) Decent nose. Clean, sweetish red fruit with good complexity. Very nice acid and a medium length finish. Very well developed fruit. Overall, very well balanced. A little more new world, but in no way overly fruity or simple.

  • 2005 Rudolf Fürst Klingenberger Spätburgunder 93 Points

    Germany, Franken

(Large generic Riedel tasting glasses) Big deep Pinot nose. Big, clean, pure tasting fruit with very good minerality and many layers of complexity. A long interesting finish. Better than many 1er Crus from major Burgundy houses I've had and with potential to equal or surpass Gr Crus as well. An impressive wine. These high end German Pinots are really good and I think maybe the next "Big Thing".

  • 2005 Rudolf Fürst Centgrafenberg Spätburgunder "R" 96 Points

    Germany, Franken

(Large generic Riedel tasting glasses) WOW! Big deep, complex nose with amazing layers and nuance. The slightly tart fruit is equally as amazing with size, depth and complexity. The fruit had great minerality and a refined quality I've only had in Gr Crus from the better Burgundy houses. Very good acid. The complex finish builds and changes in the glass and goes on for a very long time. Another stunningly good German Pinot from a young winemaker to watch. I really do think high end German Pinot is going to be a big deal in the near future..

Closing

An amazing tasting! The quality of the wines was outstanding (except for the Scheurebe, which I just don't get). To a man, all six young winemakers said they are trying to take German wines in a new direction with minimal interference in the field or the winemaking process and a dedication to dry wines. A real revelation, particularly the Pinot Blancs (weissburgunder) and the Pinot Noirs (Spatburgunder). One of the most memorable tastings I have ever attended and, unbelievably, the cost was $40!
