First day in Germany and starting with these Spätburgunder, both of which 2006, both 12.5% and both survived well the 16 years since harvest without being big guns. Both fairly similar in style, low volume, low tannin but not too weird. The Becker, some elegant fruit, some remote touch of wood and some iron. The Konig from the Rheingau, some peanut scent instead of iron. Both with good fruit in the mouth. As everything is a game of balances, the modest tannins in both are just enough, and the acidity is juicy nut not sharp. The Rheingau a little rounder and the better wine, but I was surprised by both of them.

Spatburgunder at The Wine Country (The Wine Country, Signal Hill, CA): Amazing $20 wine. Big primary red fruit nose. Big clean delicious red fruit, almost juicy. Clean and pure. Flies out of the glass. Nice balance and finish. Like a cross between a top tier Oregon Pinot and a decent 1er Cru Burgundy. Stunningly good for the price.

2007 German Dry Wine Tour w/Rudi Wiest (The Wine Country, Signal Hill, CA): (Large generic Riedel tasting glasses) Recently bottled barrel sample. Nice nose, big fruit, good complexity and nice finish. Very clean with the fruit showing through cleanly, if a little simple at this young age. Definately better than most basic Burgundies I've had from major producers and as good if not better than many village level wines as well. $19!
