Introduction

I bump into Angelica at tastings occasionally and she very kindly invited me to join her tasting group/wine club. The theme was Italian.

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2017 Freeman Vineyards Prosecco

Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Hilltops

Apple and apple skin. Aggressive mousse, fruit sweet but bone dry with a little bitterness on the finish.

  • 2016 Tenuta di Aglaea Terre Siciliane Bianco

    Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane

Medium minus intensity aromas of peach, citrus, floral top notes, slight fresh herbs. Slightly angular acidity, waxy texture, almond meal…lacks fruit on the palate for me.

  • 2016 Ottin Petite Arvine

    Italy, Valle d'Aosta

Pear, ginger spice, a little like Viognier with a smidge of Gewurztraminer…apricot and lychee. In the mouth it's got zesty and spicy acidity, slightly sharp apricot, a little lychee, quite textured, with a little alcohol warmth.

  • 2016 Suavia Trebbiano di Soave Massifitti

    Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT

Medium minus intensity aromas of waxy lemons, floral top notes, a slight saline quality, fresh herbs. Medium minus intensity flavours on the palate as well; citrus - lemon - juicy acidity, that salinity translates to the palate. Long, fresh, easy.

  • 2016 Marco Bonfante Roero Arneis Perste

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero

Peach, apricot with a slight bees wax note, a touch lemon underpin and a little honey. Juicy acidity but plenty of alcohol warmth here. Quite rich. It's a bit out of whack on the palate. Hmm.

  • 2015 Sensi Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Italy, Tuscany, San Gimignano, Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Gamey, savoury, pear and peach, saline, nutty notes. Zesty acidity, nutty pear tending to stone fruit, quite green fruit though, with some burr on the mid palate. Hmm

  • 2017 G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo Claré J.C. Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

FLAW. Corked - in the quite early stages but enough for me not to mark it otherwise. On the nose cream, jubey cherry but exceedingly sour on the palate, grippy, black tea, tannins, slight spritz as well (bottled before Malo completion?)

  • 2006 Oddero Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dried flowers, orange peel, cherry, black tea, prunes, raisins, plums…Massive acid and tannins, black tea, liquorice, all persist for ages. Still young, beautifully balanced. With time more cherry comes out. Lovely

  • 2015 Biscardo Neropasso

    Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT

Black and red cherry, slightly earthy, toasted chocolate and a little bitter coffee. Very fruit sweet; stewed berries, currants and cherries, slight plums and a little residual sugar. The tannins are chalky and drying. It’s a bit out of whack at the moment but time will probably help...or not.

  • 2015 Vigneti del Vulture Aglianico del Vulture Piano del Cerro

    Italy, Basilicata, Aglianico del Vulture

Medium minus intensity aromas of plums, black cherries, prunes, sweet oak. More of the same on the palate, fresh plums, prunes, more sweet oak. A modern interpretation shall we say. Plenty of tannic grips that is grainy, fruit persists. A bit worked for me and, arguably, therefore a little anonymous.

  • 2016 Cavallotto Dolcetto d'Alba Vigna Scot

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba

Plums, slightly earthy, spiced, blackberry, a lovely jubey quality (based on previous experience of Dolcetto I'd suggest that whole berry has been utilised). Fresh, juicy, chalky tannins, plummy, plain chocolate, slight blackberry. Yum.

  • 2010 Sensi Brunello di Montalcino Boscoselvo

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Tobacco, herbaceous, slightly oxidised, chocolate and cherry, leather. A little gamey and meaty as well plenty going on. In the mouth the it's got medium plus intensity acidity (arguably a little volatile) with plenty of tight, chalky tannins, slightly sour cherry, leather, long. It's quite complex but a hmm for me.

  • 2005 Pio Cesare Barbaresco Il Bricco

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Slight oxidised, plums, prunes, vanilla, caramel - barrique not botte? - rose, lavender and some dried flowers. For me this has less acidity than the oddero but loads more drying tannins…Hmm

Closing

What a lovely evening with charming and interesting people. I hope they invite me back. Oh, the wines were interesting. The 6ddero I bought was (obviously) superb, hahahaha, and that Cavallotto dolcetto was very good. It was also nice to retry the Tenuta Aglaea & Ottin again for baselining purposes - one close one very different...I wonder if it was bottle or mouth variation?
