Flight 1 - Dinner at Booth One (4 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    (12/13/2018)

Popped-and-poured, then revisited several hours later. So much here but very backward and lacking expression tonight, either immediately or with air. Neither Ramonet performed up to prior experience (or expectations) tonight.

  • 2013 Domaine Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    (12/13/2018)

Minty and spicy with ripe apple aromas, slight tropical hints. Surprisingly fleshy, very fun, and nicely concentrated, just not as nuanced or complex vs my last bottle opened one year back.

  • 2002 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

    (12/13/2018)

Completely enticing aromas of exotic spice, mature red fruit with floral flourishes. Similar flavors, just slightly less bright, slightly more mature. Good+ weight and length that finishes softer than it starts.

  • 2004 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (12/14/2018)

Wonderfully mature red berry and cherry throughout perfectly harmonized with Asian five spice. Everything perfectly in place, and still nicely fresh for the 2004 vintage. Good+ weight and length, with a charmingly finessed finish, even if not a powerhouse.

Flight 2 - Dinner at Blackbird (5 Notes)

  • 1988 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    (12/14/2018)

Fully mature apple and pear on nose and palate with very impressive concentration. Certainly more mature than I prefer, but this maintains its charm on the basis of its power and depth. Bottle bought shortly after release, and perfectly stored since.

  • 2010 Remoissenet Père et Fils Le Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    (12/14/2018)

Enchanting floral beginning. Poached pear and slightly tropical fruit with plenty of sweet spice. Very good density, while surprisingly so accessible for 2010 Montrachet. Already in its peak drinking window.

  • 1990 Château Cheval Blanc 98 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (12/14/2018)

Single blind in 82/85/90 vertical. Wow, what a powerhouse of ripe black plum, cassis, dark chocolate, espresso with crema and sweet spice. Exceptional depth and concentration. Easy to identify as the 1990 based on prior bottles.

  • 1982 Château Cheval Blanc 96 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (12/14/2018)

Single blind in 90.85/82 flight. Not nearly as powerful or concentrated as 1990, but so many layers of nuance and complex spice, earth and fruit. This kept developing with more air and getting more interesting over the 2 hours in glass.

  • 1985 Château Cheval Blanc 92 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (12/14/2018)

Single blind in 90/85/82 flight. Fully mature black fruit with leather, earth, savory spice. Least complex of the flight, and much less exciting to me, even if still very good. Others liked it much more.

Flight 3 - Dinner at The Bristol (5 Notes)

  • 2004 Domaine Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    (12/15/2018)

Popped and poured, then enjoyed over several hours. Lots of ripe apple, wintergreen, savory herbs and spice. Slightly more mature vs some other great bottles, but this maintained a brightness on its finish. Possibly showing the greatest density I can ever recall for the wine.

  • 2014 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    (12/15/2018)

Open 30 minutes before serving. Very ripe red and black cherry on nose and palate with very good density, good+ length. Plenty of background structure and savory spice. Much better after 30 minutes in glass. Cellar until 2024 or later, 92-94+ point potential.

  • 2009 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche Del Falletto 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (12/15/2018)

Fresh and dried red cherry and berry start-to-finish with anise, dried herbs and dried rose hints. very elegant and charmingly accessible for such as young Barolo. I was on the fence between "92 points" vs "93," but John convinced me this was worthy of 93.

  • 2002 Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

    (12/15/2018)

Opened, decanted 45 minutes before serving alongside the Mongeard-Mugneret 2002 Echezeaux. This came across as tired, even with clear and pronounced Asian five spice throughout. I kept hoping more goodness would emerge, but it never did.

  • 2002 Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (12/15/2018)

Opened, decanted 45 minutes before serving alongside the Mongeard-Mugneret 2002 Richebourg. This was bright with so much red fruit and Asian five spice. Very good weight and length. Much better/ fresher/ denser than another bottle from the same case opened last year.
