  • NV Bérêche et Fils Champagne Reflet d'Antan 93 Points

    France, Champagne

High intensity aromatics, pear, apple cider; palate is medium bodied, nice blend of rich complexity with freshness, medium length. This is really unique with good character and a bit of savory umami which is rare. Really lovely. 93

  • 1995 G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Medium-high intensity aromatics, lovely balanced nose with lovely fruit, an elegant spice throughout, slight heat; palate is light bodied, high tannins, a tad rustic but elegant too; medium finish. A lovely wine for the price, at peak or even young. 90-91
Compared to the Brovia this shows better balance in the palate, not as much showiness on the nose. 92
This keeps improving. Really lovely balance on the nose and the palate, and just delicious. 92-93

  • 1995 Fratelli Brovia Barolo Rocche dei Brovia 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Double decanted 2 hours. Really pretty nose with elegant red fruit, lovely spice; palate is a bit drying, has lost a bit of fruit, high acid, tannins well integrated; medium finish. The nose is excellent, the palate shows a bit tired. Still a pleasure. 91-92
Initially the nose was the strength here, but that faded a bit especially compared to the Vajra.

  • 2007 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

A bit more burly on the nose but still plenty of red fruits, spice; palate is light bodied but richer in fruit and texture, medium-plus acidity, low-medium alcohol, balanced but unexciting on the palate. Overall well balanced and enjoyable. 90
Worth air and in comparison this seems a bit warm/hot and unexciting. Difficult company. 88

  • 1979 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Excellent color for its age; high intensity aromatics, dried apricot, nice lightness, slight salinity; palate is medium bodied, light, elegant, slight salinity, some sweetness but very moderated; medium finish. Not the most complex, but this heads into Hudak’s stage 4 and is beautiful in its balance and classic maturity. 91
Day 3: still a pretty wine and excellent freshness and acidity. Hasn’t fallen off at all. Lovely.
