Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 1988 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs

    France, Champagne

Beautiful, remarkably fresh. Yeast, mineral, like drinking liquid sourdough bread with a honeyed pear finish. Excellent balance between the crispness, minerality, and sweetness. This was an absolute pitch perfect performance from this bottle today, wonderful.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Served blind. Crisp, young, full and round in the mouth but not much length. Perhaps holding in reserve. In the end, the two Meursault 1er's were more memorable today.

  • 2010 Bernard Boisson-Vadot Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Served blind. A touch of struck match aroma, long persistent mineral finish, with a bit of oak. With air, cinnamon emerged on the nose, and the palate became even better balanced with a more complete finish. Excellent performance by this wine today, in a great spot and should hold here at least a couple of years.

  • 2002 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Served blind, and this was the surprise of the flight -- we all thought it was at least 10 years younger than it was in actuality. The color had a green tinge, and there was a slight sourness to it that is often a hallmark of young wines. The reveal had jaws dropping.

Followed this along for several hours in the glass, and it needed them! After a few hours it softened up, and was giving a lot more.

Clearly, well stored bottles of this wine have a long and interesting road ahead of them.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Served blind. Dark color, faint browning at the edges, aroma is somewhat reserved. Comes across as dense and backward, slowly coming around. This is a serious wine that's going to need time to reach maturity; if you drink it now, plan to spend a few hours with it.

  • 2005 Faiveley Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Served blind. Oaky and youthfully exuberant but not tannic. A hint of sweet tobacco this has an almost Bordeaux quality to it. With air, this actually got more tannic and oaky. In sum, this is a baby, but it's interesting to pop and pour today.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 1996 Haegelen-Jayer Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Served blind. The most brown color of the flight, showing its age. More red fruit than most wines today, a crispness to this wine despite its maturity. Very good.

  • 1985 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Served blind. Slight browning at the edges, softer and sweeter fruit than the others in the flight. The only knock against this is a touch of burnt rubber that wafts through. The reveal was quite surprising, this is a 1985 that drinks like a wine 10-15 years younger.

  • 1996 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Served blind. Floral, light and elegant, really impressive aroma -- best aroma of the reds so far, really enticing. Light translucent color. This is a very elegant rendition of Clos Vougeot.

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Served blind. Smooth, balanced, with ripe fruit. Well balanced, but the table was going gaga for the wine served beside it (which turned out to be 02 De La Tour). I thought they were missing the elegance here -- while I also preferred the De La Tour, I admired the restraint here. To me, the De La Tour was like a great Vosne-Romanee in character, exotic spice, whereas this was like a great Chambolle all flowers and dirt.

  • 2002 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Served blind. The table was cheering upon the first taste of this wine, it's impressive. Deeper and darker than the wine next to it (99 Anne Gros) but also more tannic and youthful. With air, the Vosne spice notes and incense became more prominent. The fruit here is dense, juicy black fruit. This is a beautiful and exotic style of Clos Vougeot that's enjoyable now and will probably become even more nuanced over the next few years.
