Introduction

Our theme was reruns, which meant to bring a wine you've had before and really liked. Bonus points for a wine that no one else has had. This was a nice evening of six of with Joe and Khem doing the cooking. Well done!

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 2013 Kistler Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard 94 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Light gold color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. The last time I had this I said it was good, but need two years. Now, a little over 2 and a 1/2 years later this has blossomed into a real honey. Such pretty fruit, ripe but not ostentatious in any way, golden fruits, apple, lemon, with a tropical top note; the oak has melted away and this has impeccable balance. The palate is divine, full bodied and lively, deep and layered with lemon oil, Meyer lemon, chalk, butterscotch, golden apple, very nicely integrated and quite long. Wonderful.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2012 Occidental Pinot Noir Cuvée Catherine Occidental Station 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Dark red color with a garnet hue. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Dried earth and baking spices on the nose, deep dark fruits, baked berries. On the palate some earth, ripe berry cobbler, black cherry, vanilla, with some wood and underbrush on a medium full bodied plus frame. This has the complexity to keep it interesting for me, but the fruit profile is borderline in ripeness for my personal tastes. I think Cali pinot lovers will be gaga over this.

Flight 5 (4 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Corked. Very sad as this is such a great bottle of wine too.

  • 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red/purple color, no bricking and a 1-2mm clear edge. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2.5 hours. There's a lovely perfume here on the nose of cassis, Christmas spice, cedarbox, and earth. This needs the glass time to fully realize itself and as it does, the fruit blossoms and takes on more of a creme de cassis character with a perfume of violets and graphite. The palate belies its age, wonderful fruit, tart, cassis, creme de cassis, and a touch of dark cherry, powerful and deep, this has a lot of graphite and crushed rock minerality now. Excellent purity, well polished tannins and a long captivating finish. A wonderful '90's Bordeaux now, this has even more show down the road. 95-96pts.

  • 1995 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red/purple color, 1mm clear edge. Decanted for about an hour and slow -O for 2 hours more; drank a glass plus over 2 hours plus. Had this next to the gorgeous '90 PB and this held its own. The pedigree and producer shows through in the similarities. Great nose, earthy, dark fruits, cassis, graphite, and florals. The palate is a bit bigger than the '90, and has even more depth, succulent black fruits, and tons of minerality to drive this. Still just a baby, this has a stong future and is one of the best '95's I've had.

  • 1997 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Purple red color, 3mm tranisitional margin. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. I'd never had this vineyard before so this was a treat. Big, impressive, blackberry, cassis, rich and powerful, lots of glycerin, layers of dark fruit, youthful, plush tannins, dirt, black cherry, no aok showing. Really good. This has got a lot of life left too.

  • 2003 Château Rieussec 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Deep gold color. From 375ml, drank a small glass over 30 minutes. Sharper spice notes, ripe, orange marmalade, bitter, honey, orange cream, very spicy and a bit edgy on the palate.

Closing

The note for the 2006 Taitinger Comte de Champagne is included in the tasting event on 4/3/19 "Red & Whie Burgs at St. Dinette". Suffice it to say it was simply brilliant - 96pts.
