  • 2013 Olivier Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

A rare wine chez Olivier Leflaive - they only produce two barrels annually. No new oak (100% “fûts d’un vin”), élévage of 12 months. Truffières is very high up on the hill, and its inherent minerality paired with the elegance of the 2013 vintage, delivers a fragrant and playful, almost dancing character. It is all lemon curd and steel and flowers, so with excellent typicity but without great complexity (it does develop some orange zest and grapefruit notes), and the modest oak treatment recognises this. The acidity is wonderfully lively, the bitters are subtle and the finish is slightly tight, but length is very good. Delightful, well presented, clean and pure as always at this address. Drink now - 2022.

  • 2014 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

From a 1.4 hectare plot, two-thirds in Mazoyères and one-third in Charmes proper. This is all about detail, elegance and precision. Not decanted. There is no great power here, the style is transparent and pure, but the aromatic complexity on the nose is excellent (red cherries, roses, spices and sandalwood), and the palate is incredibly harmonious, silky and charming for such a young Grand Cru from Gevrey. There is sufficient tannic grip and posture however to remind us what we are drinking, and the mineral energy carries the flavours through to a slightly austere, but beautifully defined finish. Still very young, the last glass (after about four hours) was clearly the best. It looks like 3-5 more years of patience are required and it has at least another decade ahead of it after that. A great success in this cooler vintage, but if you only have a tasting sample rather than a whole bottle, you might easily overlook it.
