  • Drank a small glass. Four hour double decant since this was rather reductive upon opening. Medium lemon in the glass. While not the most complex this is exactly how I like Puligny. There’s a clear focus on producing an elegant terroir-driven wine. It’s not a case of minerality at the expense of fruit, though as a lovely rich lemon curd character runs throughout the wine and is backed up by beautiful floral notes of hawthorns and acacia. Dense with racy acidity.

  • A private dinner (Maison d’Olivier Leflaive, Puligny-Montrachet, France): A rare wine chez Olivier Leflaive - they only produce two barrels annually. No new oak (100% “fûts d’un vin”), élévage of 12 months. Truffières is very high up on the hill, and its inherent minerality paired with the elegance of the 2013 vintage, delivers a fragrant and playful, almost dancing character. It is all lemon curd and steel and flowers, so with excellent typicity but without great complexity (it does develop some orange zest and grapefruit notes), and the modest oak treatment recognises this. The acidity is wonderfully lively, the bitters are subtle and the finish is slightly tight, but length is very good. Delightful, well presented, clean and pure as always at this address. Drink now - 2022.
