Introduction

This was a fun gathering with most of the original Minneapolis Wine Club group. The theme was whites and pinots (Ore or Burg).

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • NV Vazart-Coquart Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 20 minutes. I think I'm growing more fond of these. This bottle was very nice, the nose brings yeast, chalk, citrus and some bright sea air. The palate shows lemon, bolder though it still maintains some finesse, orchard fruits, chalk, seashore and good length.

  • NV Marc Hébrart Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Pale rose color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Not to beat a deceased equine, but these are just stupid good. They always have been, but the current release is really ridiculous. When you factor in QPR, this knows no parallel that I am aware of. The nose offers a complex melange of fresh picked berries, though the strawberry stands out, citrus, apple, and a notable floral entry that is impressive. I had to keep checking to make sure there were no flowers around that I was smelling instead. The palate is delicious, beautiful, and carries an elegant style with bright fruits, fresh and crisp, finely textured, the same berry mix as the nose, citrus, biscuit, apple peel, refined minerals and a very long finish. Love it, plus it drinks like an $80 to 100+ bottle.

  • 2014 Arnot-Roberts Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Pale gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Looking back at my previous note, this bottle is pretty consistent. I commented on the acid and citrus being piercing, and I would maybe go a step further and say searing now. The average Cali chard drinker is not going to find love here. This is a hybrid Chablis-like wine. Gobs of acid and very tart citrus along with a lot of limestone. I didn't find this bottle as striking as my last one, in fact this seemd more primary than the one from 3 years ago.

  • 2011 Domaine Serene Chardonnay Evenstad Reserve 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Vanilla, butterscoth, acacia flowers, lemon, fairly steely palate, saline,, briny, stones, complex. The vanilla was a little too prominent even now for me.

  • 2001 Daniel Moine-Hudelot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Light medium brick red color. Splash decanted and drank a glass over an hour plus. This opens in the glass, building over 30 minutes. Lots of iron on the nose, red cherry that brightens considerably with time, sous bois, potpourri later, nice, medium body, and still has some tannin. I liked how this emerged and drank with the poise and maturity of an aged burg.

  • 2007 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Medium red color. Splash decanted, drank a glass over an hour. This sreally took its time to evolve. Cherry, red fruits, mineral, spice, white pepper on the nose. The palate is cherry, wood spices, mineral, white pepper, still firm tannins. Over time we get more earth, darker red fruits and some charcoal. 89+ to 90pts.

  • 2012 Cornerstone Cellars Pinot Noir

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Dark red color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Cinnamon and ripe berry nose, volatile. The palate seems extracted, red berry, ripe, sharp and volatile on the palate, firm tannins, heat, spice and vanila. This was rather disjointed right now. Maybe time will help it.. if not, this is it. 87ish.

  • 2012 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Medium dark red color. Decanted for an hour with some extra slow-O. Drank a glass over an hour. Interesting aromatics, tar, smoky, savory nose, red fruits, lightly earthy, sweet cherry bon bon on the nose. The palate has a very good mix of earth and nice ripe raspberry, restrained though, deep cherry, well balanced and tannins that are round but say plenty of time here. 92+ to 93pts.

  • 1994 Staglin Family Cabernet Sauvignon Estate 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

This had some bottle stank,a bit wonky, vegetal aromas, largely resolves and is more damp and mushroom, dark fruits, pencil. The palate shows dark fruits, none of the vegetal elements here, pencil, baked cherry, maybe a little stewed fruit character, though mild. Drink up. 90ish.
