The Nahe flight was certainly a big step up after the slightly disappointing Morstein trio. This Felseneck from Schäfer-Fröhlich shows a wonderful harmonious nose of white fruit, elder blossom and also some nice yellow fruit (but in a fresh not in a ripe way). Lean on the palate with an incredible balanced acidity; vibrant and full of tension. Very long, salty finish. Definitely one, if not the wine of the night. Best bottle till now. Big up Tim Fröhlich!

The Hermannshöhle was the most "favourable" wine in this flight. Lots of fruit upfront, dominated by passion fruit, mango and some pineapple. On the palate good mineral core and tension. A good but not a very good Hermannshöhle imo. Lacks the precision. I´m not sure if it will improve much in the future.

Still on the young side, this specific bottle of the 2009 Halenberg shows a lot of spontaneous yeast components in the beginning which turn into a lovely perfume of yellow and a bit of green (but not in bad way) fruit, for me this is very typical Halenberg. Round and totally in balance on the palate. Missing a bit the last acid kick but nevertheless a very, very good Halenberg. 09 is often considered as on of the best vintages of this flagship from the Nahe.

The Schlossberg separat the table into two factions. The one side says it’s too singular, the other sides (like me) loves it. For me the youngest wine of the tasting. Still dormant in it´s shell with so much power & pressure underneath. On the nose just a bit of white fruit, grapefruit and a hint of mint mixed with a mineral, wet stone component. On the palate VERY dry (much more than any other wine in the tasting beside the Trimbach), with tension through the roof. Tons of lemon and sea salt on the long, racy finish. What a young monster. Give it ten better fifteen years.

Totally different than the Schlossberg the 2009 Schlehdorn from natural head Peter Jakob Kühn shows lots of ripe, yellow fruit mixed with a bit of cheese, tobacco and lots of herbal flavors. On the palate also ripe but very deep and balanced. I was a big fan of the 2008 version of this wine, the 2009 isn’t on that level imo. Missing the freshness a bit.

I always knew that the Ried Schütt Smaragd from Knoll is a very good wine but this 2009 was really on top of the game. What a wonderful nose with aniseed, green herbs and a beautiful touch of yellow stone fruit. Very fine and lean on the palate with a lot of tension, freshness and precision. Lot’s of citrus peel on the back end. What a wonderful wine.

I think this is the very first example of the Auslese R which was produced totally without Bernd Philippi. KR is always a special wine because to me often it isn’t a typical German Riesling.
A very cool, balanced nose with aromas of lilac, balm, citrus peel, aniseed and herbal flavors. A complex but quite open nose for such a "young" Auslese R. On the palate balanced, quite complex with a lot of depth, length and precision. Still years ahead but like Dirk mentioned, one of the most pleasurable surprises of the evening.

The baroque nose is dominated by yellow fruit, acacia and also some notes of mustard and some pickled cucumber. Ripe and round on the palate. Missing a bit the cut and the precision. Very balanced on the mid-palate. On the back end I get a bit of a bitter not. Good but not really "my" wine.

This is a sleeping monster. In the beginning the famous Kirchenstück from Bürklin-Wolf showed not much but after a lot of air in the glass the wine slowly opens up and gets better and better. Quince and more fine yellow fruit, very complex and incredible subtle. Very balanced on the palate with a acidity which only slowly comes out and gets more and more sharp and precise on the back-end of your palate. Very long finish. Was a bit underestimated on the table imo. This wine needs time, perfect storing conditions and attention. Still potential left imo 95+

A very good wine with a more citrus, white peach, white flowers flavor profile. You still feel the Pfalz warmth and roundness.

For a lot of people on the table the wine of the night. I couldn’t say a word about the quality but it’s simply not my style. Nevertheless the nose is very intense with flavors of spices, apricot, honey but also a nice herbal note. On the palate intense, for me a bit to heavy. But the pressure on the mid palate is definitely impressive although you have to know where this power is coming from. Very long. Still a long life ahead.

This wine has everything (except acidity) but from everything too much. VERY intense and big. Tons of substance, dried apricots, honey and vanilla all over the place. Gets a bit better with air but I only can drink a single glass and I´m replete. That’s not my vision of dry Riesling.

Hard stand after the Unendlich which was so totally different. Much more my style. Very precise with a super sharp (for some people surely too sharp) acidity. Nearly totally on the white fruit & flower flavor profile side. Bone and I really mean bone dry. A kind of minimalistic wine in a certain sense. Long finish. Can age for another ten years.

2009 Weingut Keller Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs 93 Points
Germany, Rheinhessen
Interesting flight to start of the "ten years after" tasting. Typical "Rheinhessen" nose with a lot of yellow, ripe stone fruit but also some green reflexes like herbal notes. Quite balanced on the palate but also a touch too sweet imo. Gets better and better with air. A good Morstein but by far not on the very top.

2009 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs 90 Points
Germany, Rheinhessen
Even riper than the Morstein from Keller. Too ripe imo. Maybe the wine just needs more time to loose it’s fat but I´m not sure. Missing the precision. Not my wine.

2009 Wittmann La Borne Riesling Alte Reben 91 Points
Germany, Rheinhessen
Even a bit riper than the normal Morstein from Wittmann, which often was a kind of "problem" back in the days, when ripeness was more important than anything else. But also very deep and nicely balanced. Very broad shoulders.
