Marqués de Murrieta

Comprehensive exploration of Marqués de Murrieta wines.

Murrieta is a true founder of Rioja. First vines were planted back in 1825 and the winery was founded in 1852. In 1878 he acquired Ygay estate with its vineyards which became one of the greatest bodegas in Spain.

  Way over the hill, but alive. Wet cellar on the nose. Preserved sweetness. 2+ hours of aeration actually helped to bring the life back into wine.

  Fragrant. Intense perfumed wine. Iron. Somewhat reductive. We guessed it comes from the long time contact of the wine with the sediment in the bottle. Fades away rather quickly.

  Wine of the night for me. Touch of wood. Jamon. Good fruit concentration. Now we're talking real wine here. More weight on mid-palate. Perfect balance. 40 years old and shining!

  Up to 40% of Garnacha in the blend. Less oak aging (3-4 years which was a lot less as opposed to other wines at that time). Crianza style. Meant to be enjoyed young. Wet cloth, iron. Light body. Still surprised how well it keeps the age though.

  Special guest to compare vs. MdM wines. One of the first modernists in Rioja. Chateau principle bodega - estate surrounded with own vineyards. The wine is very friendly, fruit forwards and complete.

  Flagship wine of bodega. This is the most modern style wine of all MdMs. An effort of the new owners who acquired estate in late 80s to move away from very traditionalist heritage by introducing more French oak to produce fruitier wines. This one has stewed fruits. Sweet ripeness. Rich and generous wine with ideal balance of acidity. Elegant wine at its 30 years age. At its drinking peak now.

  Aromas of dates and other dark dried sweet fruits. Weird association with multivitamin pills and coffee beans. Intriguing with some potential. Hotter vintage wine.
