I & H's Place

The theme for the meeting was Pinot or Pinot-like.
17.5% alc.
Served blind.
Deep yellow/orange/gold.
Smells fortified - sherry like. Aldehyde, oxidized. Also reveals cumquats, lemon, citrus, honey, candied orange aromas. The palate is surprisingly sweet with spicy hints. It’s mouth coating and not cloying at all. There’s good carry and length here. Flavoursome, with plenty of interest. Could appropriately be served before or after a meal.

Cork. 12.5% alc.
Served blind.
It's 'almost' burgundy in colour. Smells of dark berry fruits, plum, blueberry and florals. Light to mid-weight, with earthy, savoury flavours combining with stalks and forest floor notes. Light, gravelly, silty tannins provide a good structure on which the flavours ride.
The group identified it as a young Burg.

Mid-dark garnet. Scented with raspberry, florals, pine, and dusty spices. It’s light to mid-weight, but has so much intensity and structure here. The palate shows more red than dark fruits. It’s sappy and spicy, with crunchy tannins that have a little grip. Got the nod of approval from the table, especially when it was revealed.

Screwcap. 14% alc.
Served blind.
Dark garnet. Smells fruit sweet. Dark berry fruits, charcuterie and a hint of chocolate. The palate is fruit driven. It’s full of sweet, dark fruit with fleshy tannins. It’s dense, has lovely mouth texture and it’s seamless. So easy to drink.

Cork. 13.5% alc.
Decanted 3 hours. Served blind.
Classic Pinot aromas - red and blue fruits, violets, rose petals, and then more florals and forest aromas. Enticing nose, for sure. The palate is elegant, balanced and refined. Raspberry, cherry, forest floor. Mildly mannered tannins provide an entry to a long finish. There’s sufficient intensity and matched plushness. In the end, it’s engaging and delicious.

Cork (which was half soaked). 13.5% alc.
Decanted and served immediately. Served blind.
Dark garnet. Initially subdued, but soon became more expressive. Fresh blue fruits with savoury, forest notes. The palate shows a fresh acid profile with spice and intensity and some richness. It slowly gathers admirers around the table. There’s some austerity but it’s pretty well balanced. The silty tannins provide a bit of grip, but they just melt away with food.
