An opportunity to try some piedmonts offerings across the three main red varietals with a primary focus on Nebbiolo and the region of Barolo. I was just going to meander around but then realised that a more rational approach would provide the best result
Initially no plan of attack was exercised…these two notes arrive on the back of that rambling
Old and New School for the first time here for me (should have seen this earlier) the older style seems to be a bit more extracted, less fruit driven and more skin exposure, the newer is clean, more fruit forward and shows the use of oak.
Some of these Barbera's were (rather disappointingly) lacking the characteristic acidity that I would expect to see from the variety. Additionally quite a few of them had far more tannins (from oak) than I would have wanted.
This was a better bracket for me. A few good wines for the cellar here…
On to the big boys. Most of these were very young.
The Barbera's were a bit disappointing. Standard strike rates for me on the other wines. That Produttori is always a favourite. A couple of the other Barolo's were pleasant as well.
2018 Rocche Costamagna Langhe Arneis
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Peach, slight peach stone, very fruit forward. Sour, a lot of money for not a lot of wine.

2017 Fratelli Barale Langhe Nebbiolo
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
plum earth, dried orange peel. Savoury but juicy acid and tight chalky tannins, a little plummy fruit. Hmm.
