Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2015 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Fading ruby. Ripe red berry and smoke. Light to medium weight, fresh red fruit with a lovely citric lift, gentle soil, some oak and chocolate toward the end. This has really good acidity for the vintage. Excellent Volnay with much more potential.

  • 2015 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Light ruby core, faded edge. More char aromas than the Cuvée Ancienne Carnot. Slightly denser, gamier, and black fruited with a similar touch of orange peel. The finish has a touch of coffee and ripe, chewy tannins. While very enjoyable now, it needs time and is not really meant for early drinking.

  • 2015 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Fragrant citrus, restrained ripeness, soil, and cooler green tones than the prior 2015's. Light to medium body, crisp, tart red fruit again with a strong dose of citrus, outstanding acidity, and a saline, stony finish. I love the fruit/soil interplay here. Seems very likely to close down given its particular structure.

  • 2014 Bouchard Père et Fils Clos Vougeot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Clear light ruby center. Loads of soil and wintergreen. Medium weight, round soil base. Complex already, not at all fruit driven, but it shares that citrus peel twist with other reds tasted today. Long soil finish with the tannins catching up and providing more grip at the end. Given that, it is surprising that is showing so well at present. Exceptionally elegant, refined version of Clos Vougeot.

  • 2014 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Pale in color. Subtle green and warm earth aromas. Elegant, utterly seamless, harmonious, and a model of finesse. Again, the citrus and acidity are there but very well integrated. There is no clear beginning or end. Despite its lighter style, I adored this wine and found it incredibly open and satisfying at this young age. Not one for massive aging, but I see it being open and completely seductive for another 10 or 15 years.

  • 2012 Bouchard Père et Fils Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Deeper than the Bèze. Char, game, and black cherry in the background. Something excitingly "animale" here. Big, sappy, and disarmingly sweet, yet serious and complex with citrus, tobacco, and smoke all taking a turn. Tannins are round and chocolaty, and there is a rising soil finish that lingers. What a great wine and how amazing that it is so approachable today. A completely different animal than the 2014 Bèze-perhaps not as fine and tame, but a definite mouthful! It surely has the material to go on for decades.

  • 2015 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Domaine

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Medium to lighter yellow. Intriguing nose of bitter citrus, herb, and a whiff of smoke. Lovely glycerine texture, soil, and amazing acidity. Very expessive and gorgeous balance and poise for a 2015. Moderate length with some vanilla oak peeking through at the end. A fantastic wine with an unusual degree of finesse for this ripe vintage.

  • 2014 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Domaine

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Light yellow. Lemon and oak. Pineapple and orange, quite glycerine feel, great feel due to obvious oak, fine acidity as one would expect from the vintage. Unfortunately, the wood dominates the finish and is unlikely to relent. Big but not nearly as shapely or detailed as the 2015 Chevalier before it. Ironic given the qualities of these 2 vintages, but that's the Corton Charlemagne and the vinification speaking, I guess.

Closing

Once again, a high class presentation with some impressive wines from this large producer. I should add one potentially important caveat to the notes. That is that the pours all came from Coravin bottles, and I do not know when they were first broached.
