Cafe Boulud - New York NY
Tasted Thursday, November 7, 2019 by Burgundy Al with 200 views
Great dinner with Mark O'Connell and the Acker team.
In 17/15/14 vertical. Complex array of orchard and stone fruit with floral charm and a bit of new oak that still needs to be absorbed. Good substance and density, just not at the same level as the 2014. 92-93 point potential.

In 17/15/14 vertical. Rich and floral with spice galore. Richness dominates with good density but less complexity vs others in the flight. Best in the next 3-5 years.

In 17/15/14 vertical. Complex cross-section of orchard fruit aromas and flavors with so much spice and floral notes. Very nuanced even without being a real powerhouse. Very good density and persistence. This still has upside from here.

Bright red cherry with equally bright textures. Good length and medium weight. Further proof to never serve a 2017 in a flight of 2016s. This is charming and elegant but lost in the context of wines from a richer, denser vintage.

Black and red cherry from start-to-finish. Fleshy start, burlier middle and finish. Good now, getting close to a fully complete and ready wine.

Mostly red cherry with some background black fruit. Floral with rich fruit to start and fully savory spice. Long finish with nearly silky textures. Perfect example of old vine concentration (mostly planted ~1930). So good now, but certainly with upside.

Red fruit with background spice, but not quite characteristically/ elegantly Volnay-like. On the firm and powerful side with fairly robust tannins. Not quite ready, I'd cellar this another 5+ years. Long finish.

In 17/16/15/10 vertical. Bright red cherry with good weight and good+ length. Lingering finish with a charming weightlessness. Upside if this puts on weight.

In 17/16/15/10 vertical. Rich start with good density, then this suddenly opens up and becomes welcoming and endearing. So much here that seem subtle but attention shows its complexity. More open and much better tonight vs when last tasted 8 months ago.

In 17/16/15/10 vertical. Lots here, but this clearly requires patience. Ripe and powerful with a brooding, nearly sullen character. Tough to assess, but I am optimistic, even if I doubt this will ever equal the 2016.

In 17/16/15/10 vertical. A wine I have enjoyed several times in the past, tonight's bottle (directly from the domaine) seemed slightly too dirty.

In 14/16/17 vertical. Still restrained, aloof and backward but with very good weight and density. Tannic middle makes this come across less classically "Volnay" today, but I like its potential. Others disagreed.

In 14/16/17 vertical. This was simply unforthcoming. Not really backward or hard, just not showing much. I liked almost all the 2016 reds tonight, but this was a head scratcher.

In 14/16/17 vertical. My favorite 2017 red tonight for current enjoyment, this was charming and well textured like many 2017s but also showing more weight and substance. Spiced in a typically Volnay-like fashion.

Red cherry flavors and aromas, clearly firm simultaneously powerful and robust with charm peaking through. Good now with upside.

There is so much good stuff here, just not necessarily much pleasure coming through right now. Bit of a tannic monster today. Very enticing upside, but 2026 or 2031 forward.

Still slightly firm with nicely maturing black cherry and earth. Good now with limited upside from here.

Harmonious red and black cherry with very good balance. Another good 2017 tonight, just not quite showing Grand Cru density or weight to me, but that is common for the vintage.

Tasted twice tonight, three hours apart, consistent note. Very floral start with pear and apple. Vintage ripeness is clear and obvious, but there is a brightly structure finish with backbone. Good now through the next 5 years.
