Dinner in Denver tonight with Ben Glaetzer, the 29 year old wine maker of Amon-Ra. This was a "historic occasion" because it was the first time that the Amon-Ra 02, 03, 04 and 05 had ever been paired against each other. Even Ben was excited to try this flight.
Exceptional wines to pair with food, company and enjoyment.
2002 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley 93 Points
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
"Easy" and "relaxed" and markedly different from the other three in the flight. It was balanced and had easily discernable fruit and spice, but was not overpowering when compared with the later Amon-Ra's.

2003 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley 98 Points
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
According to Glaetzer picked at the "absolute peak" and indeed it is an exceptional wine. Unfortunately torrential rains (4.5 inches in several hours) destroyed the grapes for that vintage, and only 250 cases were produced. A total of seven bottles made it to Sweden, and only a very limited amount ever was shipped to the U.S. But what a wine.

2005 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley 99 Points
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
An exceptional wine, equal in intensity to the 03, but not as mature, leaving the question about just how fast these wines will mature and what will they become? These are generally from 85-90 year old vines, but what will that mean for the future?

2004 Glaetzer Shiraz Amon-Ra Barossa Valley 97 Points
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Close to a 100 point wine. Interestingly enough, there is a story afloat that RP got confused between the Godolphin and the Amon-Ra when he issued his ratings on the 04 wines. Had he got it straight the 04 would have been a three digit wine. The Amon-Ra 05 is very close to that 100 point rating. So very bright because it's too young, but too good to leave alone to mature.
