Glass: Zalto Bordeaux Perfect bottle (fill level, cork). Clear, beautiful glowing ruby tawny color. Clean, medium+ intense herbaceous nose at its full peak. Rose petals, red fruit, menthol. Dense, complex and multi layered. On the palate also a wonderful experience: Acidity, tannin and alcohol are beautifully balanced. Very juicy and drink animating Barolo. Lots of red fruit, cooling menthol, herbs. Dense and long. This bottle was for me at its full peak, but no need to hurry at all. 93-94
Glass: Sophienwald White Perfect bottle (fill level, cork). Clear, extremely youthful medium golden color. Clean, medium+ intense and fully developed Zilliken nose with lots of peat, malt, ripe yellow fruit, citrus, some herbs and stony mineral notes. Very fresh, young and complex. Lovely! On the palate ever changing. Juicy fresh yellow fruit, some herbs, some smoky/peaty notes. Sugar has blended in perfectly. Dense, precise and very long, dancing on the tongue for quite a while. This perfect bottle would have last for another decade. 95-96
Glass: Sophienwald White Perfect half bottle (fill level, cork). Decanted for a few minutes. Clear, glowing amber color. Clean, classic Sauternes nose with some volatile acidity from the high Botrytis level that vanishes with time and air. Dense, but not very appealing/interesting to me. On the palate the Yquem showed, why it is the “primus inter pares” in Sauternes! I had quite a few Sauternes from different decades over the course of the last weeks, but nothing comparable to this bottle from a mediocre vintage. Very complex with dried apricot, spices, herbs, some exotic fruit. High extract, power and tension. Never broad or chubby. Wonderful racy acidity that balanced the high sugar level quite well. Very long and multi layered. Joyful to drink now, but this wine will easily evolve and improve over the next decades. 94-95
