Introduction

Another flying by the seat of your pants Wednesday wine lunch express train. Always a fun time with some exciting wines and nice steaks.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • NV Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Had a chance to revisist this again shortly after have had it a couple weeks ago. Similar, and very good, with a lot of yeast and green apple, and a less descriptive minerality. But this bottle didn't have the same overall expression of depth, toast and finish.

  • 2013 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 93 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Light gold color. Drank 1+ glasses over 90 minutes. I really like this vintage of Art Series. This really is reminescent of Chablis. You get a lot of brisk ocean air off the nose, citrus and citrus blossoms. The palate is medium to medium plus bodied, lemon, stone, brine, tangerine, with a little subtle airy vanilla cream. Very good; 93+pts.

  • 2009 Maison Leroy Bourgogne 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Medium ruby red color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 5 hours. It was really fun to check back in on this, and there is a lesson in patience today as well. Patience applies in several ways as this took its sweet time to open up and fully unfold over the course of 2 to 3 hours, and also in that this has a long beautiful future for those willing to wait. The transformation was impressive. More so from the palate as the nose really did shine from the start, but even so the development there was notable. The nose starts with a mix of red cherry and currants, but it is the dried forest floor and spice mix that really stands out. It isn't until the full 2 hour mark the floral, woodsy, blood meal perfume really emerges from the glass. The palate is quite earthy, blood, mineral dense, cranberry and cherry fruits, dried spices, and a little firmness to the tannins. As we hit the 2+ hour point the palate softens considerably this comes fully into form. These are always impressive and this is certainly one of the best Bourgogne's out there. This will reward now with a good bit of air or the time to watch it unwind over a number of hours. But I'd like to wait on mine and see this in a few more years myself. 91+(+)pts.

  • 1992 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red color with a 2mm clear meniscus. PNP, drank a glass plus over 3+ hours. This was somewhat reductive to start, vegetal and earthy. After about 20 minutes we start to see things blow off. Gradually the nose comes around and shows fine pipe tobacco, earth, cassis, blackberry, oak and anise with sublte purple flowers. The palate is full bodied with gravelly tannins, the same pipe tobacco, cassis, blackberries, wood, spice and graphite, and a little leather. This wasn't the most elegant of Mondavi Reserve's, but very good. It seemd to fall off some after the 3 hour mark.

  • 2004 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva 93 Points

    Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 4 hours plus. Impressive nose, complex with very pure fruits; cassis, boysenberry, blackberry, damp earth, truffle, cedarbox, pencil shavings and white pepper. The palate is full bodied and offers lovely brambly black and blue fruits; cassis, plum, boysenberry, blackberry, savory, graphite, truffle, soil, white pepper and a long finish with very polished tannins. This has beautiful fruit at 15+ years of age. Drinking more modern in style, forward and luxurious, but so balanced, complex, tart and fresh that there is no sense of this being anything short of outstanding. Reportedly 72% Cab and 28% Carmenere, but there's usually 4 or 5% Cab Franc that reduces the Carmenere percentage. The CT window suggests this is at the end of the line. I'd say far from it, this easily has 5 more years or more. 93+ to 94pts.
