Introduction

Christie and I met up with Wee-Ping, Vivien, and Kip. It's been almost 2 years since we last got together. The food was hit and miss this night with both Christie's mushroom risotto and my eggplant dish not being all that flavorful. But the company and wines definitely made for a fun night to catch up.

Flight 1 - Whites (2 Notes)

With salad, foccacia, and cheese board

Pretty close to PnP. Flint and mild smokey aromas with apples and a bit of butter. Apples, small amount of butter, and mild oak spice on the palate. Nice acids give the wine structure. Finishes with apples, mild oak, herbs and flint.

  • 2009 Domaine Laroche Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Lovely aromas of gala apples, minerals, hints of parmesan and honey. Gala apples on the palate with minerals, herbs, and mild chalk. Nice acids but not that high for a chablis with a rounded mouthfeel that seem to reflect the warm vintage. 90+

  • 1994 Tenuta Monolo Bramaterra Riserva Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Bramaterra

Corked! Subtle after slow ox of 4h and decant of 1h. But became more prominent with more air afterwards.

  • 2012 Domaine Joseph Voillot Volnay 1er Cru Champans 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Spices, herbs and potpourri on the nose with some stems and cherries. On the palate, pretty cherries, herbs, bark, a hint of earth, mild green stems and minerals. Elegant texture with mild-moderate tannins and very nice acids. Surprised that this was open and drinking well now. Imagine that this will improve with more ageing although drinking nicely now.

  • 2016 COS Vittoria Pithos Rosso 91 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Vittoria DOC

PnP to replace the corked 1994 Monolo Bramaterra. PnP. Initially fairly tight aromas with moderate reduction then hints of herbs, earth and cherries. After about 10 min fof air, palate with cherries, blackberries, mild plums, earth, minerals and herbs. Mild-mod tannins. Nice acids and a lovely finish. Nicely expressive. Prob my favorite wine of the night. Just drinking well! 91+

  • 2013 Clos Mogador Priorat

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

Ripe cherry aromas with some vanilla, hints of herbs and oak spice. Palate also had ripe cherries that bordered on cherry cough syrup, herbs, significant vanilla and oak spice. Prominent tannins. Obviously very young but not my style.

  • 2011 Azienda Agricola Cianfagna Tintilia del Molise Sator 86 Points

    Italy, Molise, Tintilia del Molise

Decanted for 1.5h then back into bottle to restaurant. Still tight with ripe cherries, plums, bark, earth and a bit of cough syrup. Mild vanilla and oak spice as well. Palate showed ripe cherries, plums, minerals, and coffee. Prominent tannins on midpalate. With more air throughout the dinner, the coffee and medicinal cough syrup started to take over the palate that was too much for me at this stage. Perhaps with some more age, the wine will smoothen out and the flavors come more into balance? Not sure.
