Introduction

Another great tasting at K&L--and a fantastic bargain. The 2017 Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin was really quite good, but the 2005 Louis Latour Nuit St. George was the real highlight of the show. Perfectly aged.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2017 Vignerons des Terres Secrètes Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine

Tons of tropical fruit on the nose, framed by just a light hint of oak. Racy acidity on the palate, with mango/passionfruit, and some pear. No perceptible oak on the palate. Very fresh--no need to age. I like this a lot.

  • 2017 Prosper Maufoux Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune

More subdued than the Macon. Classic French chardonnay nose. Lemon and pear on the nose. On the palate, dense stone fruit, lemon curd. Medium plus acid. Clean wine--nice.

  • 2017 Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Reductive nose, even though this had been open for a little over three hours. Heavy on the matchstick. On the palate, there's a little pear, with cactus flower/prickly pear poking through. Citrus zest, more orange than lemon.

This needs a long time to unwind. Maybe 10, 10+ years?

  • 2017 Joseph Drouhin Puligny-Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

Nose is a little oaky (apparently this sees 25% new oak). Medium plus body, but only medium acidity. Lemon/lime nose. On the palate, lemon, apples, baking spices, apple pie. Minerals. Pretty good--maybe the oak will recede with time.

  • 2017 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Goodness me. A little closed on the nose, but hints of greatness coming through. Creamy oak. Cashew. Cinnamon sugar. Pineapple upside down cake. More tropical fruits.

On the palate, more dense, dense tropical fruit (mostly pineapple). Medium plus acid. Cinnamon and cardamom. (baked) apples. Fuck me this is good---but I can tell that it's still quite wound up. Maybe ten years to get to a good place, and hanging on another ten after that?

  • 2017 Jacques Bavard Bourgogne 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Nose is more pine needles and forest floor than fruit, but there's some black cherries and licorice poking through. Medium plus acidity, and a surprising amount of tannin. Almost jammy fruit on the palate, along with the earth? Confusing.

This seems a little rustic to me.

  • 2018 Domaine Charles Audoin Bourgogne 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Expressive nose--surprisingly glossy for an old world pinot. Plenty of fruit, mostly pinot. On the palate, definitely polished, with clean cherry and pomegranate. Nice acidity though, so it's still balanced. Drink now.

  • 2017 Domaine Henri Gouges Bourgogne 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Reddish/blue fruit on the nose, hint of herb. Lots more fruit on the palate with a bit of oak. Simple but quite pleasing. Acidity to age, but it's already good now.

  • 2017 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Dense nose, with plenty of powerful fruit. Cherries and raspberries. Light sous-bois. On the palate, tons of acidity, and medium plus tannin (though enough fruit to stay balanced). Cherries, raspberries. Herbal--tarragon and mint. Cocoa dusted cherries and maybe some leather.

This needs some time to expand, but it already has a long finish. I'd love to try this again in twenty years. If I could afford it, I'd keep a half dozen in my cellar and try every half decade.

  • 2017 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Dense nose. Cherries. Orange zest. Cinnamon. Cardamom/rice pudding. Strawberries. Really really fresh.

On the palate, zippy acidity but quite light tannin. Also very fresh on the palate. Crushed strawberries and fresh cream (tastes like Eton mess). Vanilla bean. But also a deeper old world aspect, with fall foliage, petrichor and sous-bois. This is really enjoyable now. I can see it aging for a few years, but I can't imagine more then a decade. Love to be proven wrong though.

  • 2005 Louis Latour Nuits St. Georges 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

Based on the previous cellartracker notes, this is well out of it's dumb phase. Macerated cherries on the nose, plus mocha, cocoa. Minty almost--thin mints? Baked cherries, strawberry short cake. On the palate, plenty of aged Burgundy character. Mushrooms. Earth. Petrichor. Dark cherries with cocoa and leather. Tannin gone, acid remains. Caramel note. Super duper.

Earth/clay nose with a hint of tobacco. My first thought was good old Carolina clay. I like this a lot, but also I don't have a ton of experience with aged Burgundy, so maybe this is a bit standard?
