An opportunity to taste some Rieslings at Five Way Cellars
Yum yum yum...lots to like here despite youth. I walked away with the generous Pichler and the lovely Donnhoff...
2018 Gunderloch Fritz's Riesling
Germany, Rheinhessen
Medium minus intensity aromas of sulphur, lime and finger lime, a touch of stone fruit. Dry with medium plus intensity acidity, chalky grip on the mid palate, medium minus intensity fruit flavours of lime and lemon, sulphur quite dominant. Meh.

2018 Wittmann Riesling 100 Hügel
Germany, Rheinhessen
Sulphur, green apple and a smidge of peach. Slight spritz, smidge of residual sugar makes the fruit 'pop' a little. Medium plus intensity acidity, a little texture, medium plus length, simple. Okay.

2019 Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown Riesling Obstgarten
Australia, Victoria, North East, King Valley
Peach, stone fruit, riper than the previous two wines, a little orange blossom as well. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy, the peach is slightly unripe and nectarine that reminds me of the hard ones you get at the supermarket with a touch of orange blossom. Finishes medium length with some encroaching bitterness. Hmm

A little sulphur but also aromas of 'round' ripe apple and lemon, a little sweet spice. in the mouth it's juicy, fleshy, more citrus with lemon, a little texture, wet, short but balanced and pleasant. Okay.

Lemon, lime, sulphur, quite a simple nose. Medium plus intensity acidity with citrus and sulphur on the palate. Youngish. <shrugs>

Lime, sulphur, green apple and a touch of unripe stone fruit. Juicy acid, green apple supported by the other fruit aromas. Medium plus length, tiny bit of silky texture coats the palate. Okay

2018 Loosen Bros. Riesling Dr. L

2017 Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling Schieferterrassen
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
This is all wild ferment funkiness; cheesy and leesy as well over sweet spice and apple. Tangy, bone dry, burr on the mid palate. fruit a little muted. Hmm

2017 Georg Breuer Rüdesheim Riesling
Germany, Rheingau
A little funky with sulphur, earth, a little apple. Pronounced acidity, sharp green apples on the palate. May years required to give it some complexity...the acid says it could handle it but what is going to be left flavourwise?

2016 F.X. Pichler Riesling Federspiel Ried Burgstall
Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Rich and ripe smelling; a little sulphur, a touch of lime but also orchard fruit, a touch of clay as well as a perfumed top note and a bit of apricot. Medium plus intensity acidity is balanced by fruit richness and plenty of breadth. Positively dense in fact, for a riesling, with a hint of botrytised characteristics. Woof.

2018 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett
Germany, Nahe
Sulphur over peach, ripe apple, a little almost mandarin. In the mouth ripe apple, medium plus intensity acidity, touch of creamy richness, textured, same fruits here, long. Lovely. Donnhoff you've done it again.
