Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 1973 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A generous contribution from Tom. BV a sentimental favorite of mine, great opportunity to drink one of the iconic vintages of the 1970s. Cork came out OK (thx the Greg...)well stored bottle. PnP, drank over about an hour alongside a few others.

Bright garnet color, some fading and orange at the rim. Nose of dusted black cherry, baking spice, herbs and faint oak. Plate showing cherry and red fruits, orange zest, floral/violets, cedar. smooth texture. Medium weight and finish.

Wine is in a tertiary phase, probably has been for a while. Fruits have a dusty, elegant way about them. A great showing on this day, a real treat to drink an historic wine like this!

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Château Cos d'Estournel 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

One of my contributions for the lunch, this wine was fantastic at this lunch 2 years prior...good excuse to trot it out again.

Notes from 18:"Color was a faded purple/garnet, bricking at the edge. Nose of dusted dark berries, minerals and floral notes.. Elegant, mature palate showing black cherry, cassis, mineral, cigar, forest floor and violet. Smooth texture, medium bodied and long (for this age) finish."

Picked up a bit more chalk and mineral with this bottle (from memory). Drank well and did not fade over the course of 3 hours. I wrote that its past its peak a couple years ago - which while true the wine is not fading based on this bottle. Will probably drink last bottle in next 2 years - classic Bdx!

  • 1986 Henschke Shiraz Mount Edelstone

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley

Generous contribution from Jeff (at his first PNV lunch). A trat to dink old Henschke, my experience has been limited to Hill of Grace, fist time with this designate. Cork came out clean, PnP.

Vibrant, faded ruby color, mild separation. Nose of red fruits, soy, savory notes. Palate showing red currant, cedar, game, truffle/mushroom(?), slight spice/pepper. Medium/full bodied (adjusted for age...).

Classically Aussie profile, at full maturity. Fun to drink a well aged bottle like this. Would drink now, moving into tertiary phase

Flight 3 (4 Notes)

  • 1994 Dunn Vineyards Petite Sirah Howell Mountain 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Bottle purchased as part of a vertical several years ago, a fun and rare wine from Dunn. Given the long-lived nature of the wines, thought it would be a good vintage to try with this group.

Inky black/purple color, no real fading in color. Nose of pain grille, dark fruits, earth. Palate showing blackberry, savory notes, smoke and plum. Nicely aged, elegant. Not as brooding as younger petite sirah. Full bodied and medium finish.

Would love to have had this with some grilled meats and spent a bit more time with it. An interesting and unique wine

  • 1999 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

One of my contributions to the event. This wine always kills (IMO) and a good chance to mix it up. Last bottle was 3 years ago.
Decanted for about 30 minutes, drank over 2 hours...the air time helps, was much better with some time in the decanter

From prior notes:"Dark ruby color. Nose was red fruits, spice, licorice, Palate of blackberry, blueberry liqueur, strawberry preserve, pepper, savory and herbs. Rich mouthfeel, secondary characteristics on the mid palate. Long and nuanced finish...."

Mostly consistent, picked up a bit more savory/game, spice and tapenade with this bottle. In a great spot, should last some time, but...I think it's fully mature at this point and may risk decline. Would drink within the next 5 years to get the full experience (IMO)

  • 1995 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Always a treat to drink an aged Spottswoode, this was slow oxed for short time, drank next to a 1995 Mouton Rothschild, fun to compare. My first time with the 1995.

Light, translucent garnet color. Nose showing dark fruit, cassis, pencil shavings, dried flowers. Palate of aged red fruits, plums, licorice, cedar. Nicely nuanced secondary notes.Medium weight and medium/long finish.

Spottswoode does not disappoint (in my experience), this one better than expected. The 95 Napa and CA vintages get overshadowed by the excellent 94. This was beautifully aged, in a great spot right now. Would probably drink over next 5 years although well stored bottles may go longer...

  • 1995 Château Mouton Rothschild 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A generous contribution from one of our guests. My first experience with this vintage of MR. Drank next to a 95 Spottswoode.

Opaque, slightly faded purple color, mild separation. Nose was currant, lead-pencil and smoke. Palate of dusted blackberry, spice/pepper, cedar notes, graphite. Medium/full body (by BdX standards), medium finish.

Fully mature, classic first growth. Showing was good but not great on this day. Would like to have spent more time with it

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2014 Tua Rita Redigaffi Toscana IGT 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Generous contribution from Jamie. I am a fan of Tua Rita wines, my first time with the Redigaffi.

Vibrant red color. Nose showing red fruits and tobacco. Palate of black cherry, red currant, baking spice and leather. Smooth texture, full body and medium finish. Texture is notable, plush Merlot profile. Still young but drinking well on this day. Will be interesting to drink this over time to track its evolution. Should improve with some age.
